Festive celebrations turned into profound grief in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan. A family gathering in Shankarpur village of Chimur tehsil ended in bloodshed when a trivial dispute over chicken curry escalated into a brutal attack, leaving the younger brother dead at the hands of his sibling. The deceased has been identified as 50-year-old Ramesh Shriram Binkar, while the accused elder brother is Jagan Shriram Binkar.
Raksha Bandhan Visit Turns Fatal
According to the police complaint, the day began with celebratory spirits. The two sisters of Ramesh and Jagan, Bharti and Sulochana, had traveled all the way from Nagpur to Shankarpur to tie rakhis on their brothers' wrists. The family shared a meal featuring chicken together in the afternoon, after which the sisters tied rakhis to both brothers. The sisters then departed for Nagpur at approximately 3:30 PM, completely unaware that tragedy would strike just hours after their departure.
Dispute Erupts Over Leftover Chicken
The atmosphere inside the house shifted shortly after the sisters left. In the evening, upon returning from work, Ramesh began eating chicken and set aside the remaining chicken curry in the house. This minor detail triggered an argument between the two brothers at around 5:30 PM. Heated words and abuses were exchanged, pushing the situation toward a violent confrontation as tempers flared inside the household.
As the argument intensified, Jagan went inside the house and returned carrying an iron axe. Without hesitation, he struck Ramesh on the neck with the weapon. The severe blow and subsequent excessive blood loss proved fatal, causing Ramesh to collapse on the ground and die on the spot. The incident took place around 7:00 PM on Wednesday.
Habit of Alcohol Consumption and Prior Tensions
The middle brother of the family informed the local police about the tragic incident. He stated that both Jagan and Ramesh had a habit of consuming alcohol and frequently engaged in quarrels over trivial matters. However, what started as a routine petty argument on Wednesday unfortunately took a fatal turn, resulting in the elder brother taking the life of the younger one.
Police Investigation Underway
Upon receiving information about the crime, local police reached the scene immediately and initiated a thorough investigation. Authorities have launched formal proceedings into the matter, gathering evidence and recording statements from family members to establish the exact sequence of events leading up to the attack.
