Tensions have surged across Manipur's Kangpokpi district following the sudden disappearance of two young local men who have been untraceable since Wednesday. In response to the development, a 48-hour total shutdown beginning Thursday evening was called to demand their immediate and safe return. The protest action seeks to urge state authorities and law enforcement personnel to launch prompt measures to trace the youths.
Identity of the Missing Youths and Abduction Allegations
The two individuals have been identified as 21-year-old Tinginlun Chongloi and 20-year-old Paoginlal Hangsing, both residing in Taphou Kuki village. According to community representatives, the two were allegedly abducted by Naga militants while commuting between Hengbung and Taphou Kuki village. The Taphou Kuki Village Authority also expressed deep concern over the incident and pressed administrative officials for urgent intervention to secure their safe release.
Concerns Over Security Response and Administrative Action
The Committee on Tribal Unity sharply criticized state authorities and security agencies, citing a failure to ensure adequate protection for the Kuki-Zo community. The group further alleged that law enforcement treats security incidents inconsistently depending on the background of the victims involved.
The organisation stated that prompt rescue operations and high-level attention typically follow incidents involving other groups, whereas incidents involving Kuki-Zo victims often encounter delays or inaction. They warned that this perceived disparity emboldens anti-social elements, cautioning that demonstrations will intensify if the two young men are not returned unharmed, placing full accountability for subsequent developments on the administration.
