Domestic equity indices opened Thursday's trading session on a sharply negative note, reversing gains from the preceding trading day under substantial investor selling pressure. Softer global signals and cautious sentiment weighed on trading desks right from the opening bell, pushing benchmark indices deep into negative territory. The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex tumbled 613.95 points at the open to touch 74,214.30. Simultaneously, the National Stock Exchange Nifty 50 dropped 215.90 points, slipping to 23,230.90 and falling below the psychologically watched 23,250 threshold.
Market breadth during the early minutes was heavily tilted toward declining counters. Only 806 stocks managed to record gains during the morning window, whereas 1,591 scrips traded lower in the red. Another 173 equities remained unchanged in price. This widespread advance-decline divergence highlighted that liquidation was not confined to a handful of large counters, but spanned across broader market segments.
Financial and Banking Heavyweights Lead the Plunge
Heatmap readings on the Sensex indicated that the slide was predominantly orchestrated by deep cuts in banking and non-banking financial names. Non-banking lender Bajaj Finance witnessed the steepest drop, plunging 5.13% to ₹986.70. Private lender Axis Bank slumped 3.50% to quote at ₹1,201.00, while Bajaj Finserv shed 3.35% to hover around ₹1,784.15.
The sell-off extended across other major private lenders and corporate entities. Kotak Mahindra Bank dropped 1.45%, while aviation major IndiGo declined 1.89%. In the insurance space, heavy declines were recorded across shares of HDFC Life as well as SBI Life Insurance, consolidating the broader sectoral weakness that kept the indices firmly depressed throughout the morning trade.
Defensive Resilience in Select Counters
Despite pervasive selling across the floor, a tiny pocket of stocks showed resistance and traded in positive territory. Information technology major Tech Mahindra advanced 0.92% to trade at ₹1,569.30, while pharmaceutical firm Sun Pharma gained 0.29% to reach ₹1,870.35. These isolated upticks, however, failed to balance out the extensive losses registered across financial and index-heavyweight scrips.
Factors Behind Thursday's Slide
Subdued trading across international markets paired with broader macroeconomic uncertainties prompted participants to lock in profits after earlier gains. The intense concentration of selling within prominent banking and finance counters compounded the weakness, driving both key benchmarks down to their session lows.
