Defence technology firm Apollo Micro Systems Limited has secured a significant development in the domestic defence sector. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has shortlisted and empanelled the company as the Prime Development Agency for its Indigenous Precision Range Extension Kit (IPREK) program. This selection marks the official entry of Apollo Micro Systems into India's precision guided munition (PGM) market segment.
Strategic Entry Into Precision Guided Munition Business
The Indigenous Precision Range Extension Kit (IPREK) program is designed to modernise existing weaponry within the Indian Air Force's inventory. The IPREK system functions as a bolt-on precision guidance and range extension module engineered to transform standard General Purpose (GP) 500 Kg unguided bombs into long-range precision glide weapons.
This initiative operates under the framework of the Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020 (DAP-2020), which represents one of India's main defence procurement pathways. Under this policy, private sector defence firms are invited to invest their own capital into the design, research, and development of sophisticated military equipment and systems without initial government funding.
Empanelment Significance and Indigenous Capability
Commenting on the selection, Apollo Micro Systems stated in its official press release that the empanelment represents more than just a procurement win. The company highlighted that the decision serves as a formal endorsement from the Indian Air Force of AMS's technological capability to design, build, and deliver high-precision guided weapon systems completely within India.
By converting existing conventional 500 Kg unguided munitions into standoff precision glide weapons, the program aims to enhance the air force's operational reach and strike accuracy in a cost-effective manner while bolstering self-reliance in advanced weaponry.
