A sharp increase in the legislative strength of the Bharatiya Janata Party has set off intensive discussions over a restructuring of the Meghalaya Cabinet led by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. Following the induction of eight former United Democratic Party (UDP) legislators, the party is seeking a significantly expanded role inside the ruling dispensation. In a 60-member Assembly where the BJP previously held just two seats, its newly expanded footprint of 10 MLAs has fundamentally altered the power equations within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA).
Shift in Alliance Arithmetic After September Defections
The political balance inside the ruling alliance shifted dramatically on September 23, when eight UDP legislators formally crossed over to join the BJP. That mass departure reduced the UDP to just four members in the House. Capitalising on its improved numbers, the BJP has reportedly sought three ministerial portfolios along with a Deputy Chief Minister post to reflect its enhanced standing in the coalition.
BJP Meghalaya spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang commented on the unfolding scenario, indicating that more senior figures could potentially join the party in the coming days. At the same time, Kharkrang dismissed any suggestions of orchestrating a split within the National People’s Party (NPP). Meanwhile, official recognition of the change remains tied to the Assembly Speaker, who is currently examining the formal documentation submitted for the merger of the eight legislators.
Eye on Key Portfolios and Deputy Chief Minister Role
Several prominent names among the newly joined members have emerged as contenders for prominent ministerial positions. Lahkmen Rymbui is understood to be seeking the post of Deputy Chief Minister in addition to the Finance portfolio. Similarly, Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem has been linked with an interest in the Home department, while Kyrmen Shylla is reportedly eyeing the Urban Affairs ministry.
These contested departments are currently occupied by veteran leaders within the MDA administration. The existing government portfolio allocation confirms that Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma retains the Finance portfolio. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong oversees Home (Police), and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar manages Urban Affairs. There has been no formal announcement or administrative confirmation indicating that Tynsong will be replaced or that these high-profile portfolios will be reassigned.
Questions Over UDP President's Cabinet Seat
The continued cabinet presence of UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh has also emerged as a significant point of negotiation. Observers indicate that a potential adjustment regarding Lyngdoh carries noticeable momentum, even as other cabinet demands remain under review. Lyngdoh currently oversees four substantial portfolios: Power, Textiles, Water Resources, and Taxation.
Both Metbah Lyngdoh and Lahkmen Rymbui had entered the ministry during the previous cabinet reshuffle in September 2025, which saw Paul Lyngdoh and Kyrmen Shylla dropped from ministerial positions. Pushing back against political speculation, UDP general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne dismissed claims that Lyngdoh or Rymbui might be dropped from the government, reiterating that decisions regarding any cabinet reshuffle remain the sole prerogative of the Chief Minister.
