A medical team at Williamnagar Civil Hospital in Meghalaya successfully excised a massive 15-kilogram ovarian tumour from a 45-year-old female patient on September 8. The intricate surgical intervention represents a significant milestone for the district healthcare facility, proving its capacity to handle life-threatening and complex surgical cases within the state.
High Risk Medical Background and Challenges
For nearly five years, the patient had been suffering from progressive abdominal distension and persistent discomfort. Her condition was further complicated by an underlying cardiac ailment, which elevated the risks associated with general surgical procedures and standard anaesthesia protocols. Operating on a patient with heart vulnerabilities while extracting such a heavy mass required extreme surgical precision and delicate perioperative management.
Innovative Anaesthetic Technique and Team Effort
To mitigate the elevated risks tied to her heart condition, the surgical team performed the procedure using epidural anaesthesia. Hospital officials confirmed that this was the very first major and complicated ovarian tumour operation executed under this specific anaesthetic approach at the facility. Senior gynaecologist Dr Vince Momin served as the lead surgeon for the procedure, while anaesthetist Dr Sengrak Marak skillfully managed the anaesthesia to keep the patient's cardiac parameters safe throughout the surgery.
