The athletic landscape and urban infrastructure in Mizoram received a major boost on Thursday following the formal opening of the newly upgraded Mizo High School Field in Aizawl. Built at an expenditure of Rs 16.06 crore under the Aizawl Smart City Limited initiative, the modernized sports complex combines multi-tier vehicle parking, modern athletic amenities, and dedicated community spaces. Chief Minister Lalduhoma led the inauguration ceremony, highlighting the facility's role in promoting physical wellness, sports, and youth development across the state capital.
Advanced Sporting Amenities and Structural Capacity
The primary sports arena features a natural grass surface measuring 73.35 metres by 33.12 metres, designed to comfortably accommodate around 310 spectators. To address vehicle congestion in surrounding neighborhoods, the development incorporates a two-level parking facility capable of housing 80 four-wheelers and 47 two-wheelers simultaneously. Civic infrastructure upgrades also include a 35,000-litre water storage tank, public rest facilities, and a dedicated security room.
Fitness enthusiasts and athletes gain access to an elevated jogging track, a dedicated cycling track, and a cricket practice pitch. Additional community features built into the footprint include an elevated stage for public functions, a store room, an open-air gymnasium, a children's play area, a landscaped garden, and clean drinking water coolers.
Historical Legacy and Heritage Preservation
The venue carries notable historical importance for the region, marking the exact location where Mizoram's first church was established back on June 10, 1896. To honor this local heritage, architects constructed a replica structure modeled after the original 1896 church within the complex grounds.
During his address, Chief Minister Lalduhoma noted that restoring the traditional title of Mizo High School Field honors its long-standing role in nurturing generations of local sporting talent. He acknowledged that the renovation initiative was originally conceived under previous administrations, expressing gratitude for earlier groundwork that his current government continued and brought to completion.
Ministerial Representation, Handover and Administration
Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Minister K. Sapdanga attended the event as Guest of Honour, expressing appreciation for the new facilities delivered within his constituency. Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Lalthansanga alongside Health Minister Lalrinpuii were also present at the ceremony.
With construction concluded, Aizawl Smart City Limited formally transferred administrative control of the complex to the General Administration Department. Ongoing management will be handled by a dedicated joint committee comprising state government officials, members of the Zarkawt Local Council, non-governmental organization leaders, and the Principal of Mizo High School.
