Security forces intercepted a major narcotics smuggling attempt near the India-Myanmar border, recovering a substantial haul of illegal drugs in Mizoram. The operation, led by the Assam Rifles, resulted in the seizure of heroin valued at more than Rs 1.87 crore in the Champhai district. Acting on specific intelligence regarding illicit drug movement in the region, the security personnel initiated the targeted operation.
Ambush Along the Border Area
Acting on the tip-off received on Saturday, the troops deployed an ambush along the Tiau river located in the Vangkai area of Zokhawthar. During the surveillance, the personnel spotted a woman crossing the river carrying a green polybag in her hand. She placed the bag on the riverbank and gave a signal to another individual who was waiting nearby on a scooter.
The Suspects Evade Capture
The situation escalated when the duo noticed the approaching security personnel and attempted to flee the scene. While the woman managed to escape across the border towards Myanmar, her accomplice sped away rapidly on the scooter. The suspects left behind the green bag, which prompted a thorough search by the stationed troops.
Recovery and Handover of Narcotics
Upon inspecting the abandoned bag, the personnel discovered 250.21 grams of heroin concealed inside. The estimated market value of the recovered narcotics is pegged at over Rs 1.87 crore. Following the seizure, the confiscated contraband was handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department in Champhai to facilitate further investigation and ensure necessary legal action.
