Aizawl: Mizoram currently maintains a network of 48 centres and homes dedicated to offering treatment, care, and rehabilitation services to 5,224 individuals who are battling drug addiction, officials announced on Sunday. The state administration continues to monitor and support these facilities as part of its ongoing efforts to curb substance abuse.
Financial Allocation and Support
To bolster these rehabilitation initiatives, the state government has allocated Rs 42 lakh in financial assistance to these various facilities during the current fiscal year. This funding is designed to strengthen their operational capacities and ensure continuous support for individuals undergoing recovery.
The Hulhliap Detoxification Centre
In a separate initiative, 2,255 people have successfully undergone treatment at Hulhliap, a short-stay detoxification centre established specifically for individuals struggling with drug dependence. Ever since the facility officially commenced operations in June last year, a total of nine batches of inmates have completed the structured programme, according to an official statement.
Government expenditure on these nine batches conducted at the facility has crossed Rs 3.86 crore. Additionally, the Hulhliap centre has secured supplementary financial assistance amounting to Rs 1.34 lakh from various other sources.
Functioning primarily as a dedicated detoxification hub, the facility possesses the infrastructure to accommodate approximately 200 inmates simultaneously.
Treatment Methodology and Progression
During the initial 15-day period of their stay at the centre, inmates receive comprehensive detoxification treatment under the direct supervision of qualified doctors, nurses, and counsellors. Following this physical cleansing phase, participants undergo specialised spiritual counselling sessions, another official noted.
Once the structured programme at Hulhliap concludes, the inmates are either safely handed over to the custody of their respective families or referred to specialized rehabilitation centres for extended care and long-term support.
