The government of Mizoram has officially launched a statewide cleanliness competition aimed at fostering hygiene, environmental consciousness, and clean personal habits among school students across the region. Titled the 'Mizoram Green Schools League', the campaign is designed to embed sustainable sanitary practices into the daily routines of young learners from an early age.
Joint Initiative Under Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0
This extensive educational program is collaboratively organised by the state's Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) department alongside the School Education department. Operating under the framework of Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, the joint venture seeks to combine administrative resources and educational channels to achieve maximum outreach and impact across all educational institutions in the state.
Three-Tiered Structure and Incentives
To ensure widespread participation, the Green Schools League will be conducted sequentially across three administrative tiers: block, district, and state levels. While the initiative incorporates monetary prizes for top-performing schools, officials emphasized that cash awards are merely an encouraging mechanism. The underlying goal remains the cultivation of a enduring sense of civic duty, motivating children to maintain cleanliness at school, within their households, and across their local neighborhoods.
Cleanliness as a Metric of Development
Inaugurating the initiative, UD&PA Minister K. Sapdanga highlighted that standards of cleanliness and hygiene serve as primary indicators of a society's overall progress and development. He stressed that building a healthy and pristine environment for future generations represents a shared societal duty where both youth and adults must play active roles in driving long-term change.
Mobilising Youth and Educator Leadership
School Education Minister Vanlalthlana commended the proactive spirit of local Mizo youth, noting their recent voluntary efforts to clean up neglected public spaces. He urged citizens to sustain these positive habits so Mizoram maintains exemplary cleanliness standards for visitors. Furthermore, he called upon educators and school staff to lead by example, assuring full departmental backing for the smooth execution of the Green Schools League.
