Railway movement connecting Mizoram with the rest of the country has come to a standstill following heavy rainfall that caused substantial soil erosion along the tracks on the Assam-Mizoram route. Technical teams from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) have launched emergency restoration operations along the damaged rail line between Jamira in Assam and Bairabi in Mizoram to repair the infrastructure and resume normal schedules.
Track Damage along the Katakhal-Bairabi Route
The downpour, which struck on the evening of September 3, severely washed away the soil beneath the railway line along the Katakhal-Bairabi section. The loss of earth beneath the tracks rendered the stretch unsafe for train operations, prompting instant intervention from railway staff. Ground crews alongside heavy engineering equipment were quickly dispatched to the site to clear debris and stabilize the track foundation.
Stranded Passengers and Alternative Transport Schemes
The sudden stoppage of train services left nearly 900 passengers heading toward Aizawl stranded at Sairang station. To resolve the emergency, railway administrators organized road transport, deploying 16 buses from Sairang to ensure passengers reached their intended destinations. Meanwhile, the Sairang-Guwahati Express was short-terminated at Bairabi and subsequently routed back to Sairang.
Other passenger services experienced similar route adjustments. The Silchar-Bairabi Passenger train halted prematurely at Jamira station, where authorities arranged replacement road transport for commuters continuing toward Bairabi. Additionally, the Guwahati-Sairang Express was short-terminated at Hailakandi, with operations remaining suspended on the Hailakandi-Sairang stretch. Multiple train journeys planned for September 4 were cancelled entirely as restoration efforts continued.
Passenger Support and Helpdesk Setup
To assist travelers facing unexpected delays, the Northeast Frontier Railway set up assistance counters and basic amenities. Passengers at Jamira, Bairabi, and Sairang stations received drinking water and light refreshments while awaiting transit. Specialized helpdesks were also activated across major stations, including Guwahati, Lumding, Naharlagun, Badarpur, and Sairang, offering real-time updates regarding train schedules and road connection arrangements.
Engineers and maintenance teams continue working at the location, while senior officials are directly supervising the track repairs. Railway authorities stated that normal services will be restored as soon as track safety tests are successfully completed.
