September 8 witnessed a noticeable upward movement in retail gold rates across major southern hubs such as Chennai and Hyderabad. Prices climbed across all purity tiers, including 24K, 22K, and 18K gold, as domestic retailers responded to firm trading indicators from the international bullion markets. Jewelry stores and retail counters are already recording higher footfalls, driven by buyers attempting to complete advance purchases before the peak festival demand kicks in, a period when precious metal prices historically experience sharp upward spikes.
Retail Gold Trends and Regional Price Stability in Silver
The retail market momentum in Chennai and Hyderabad directly reflects the positive signals emerging from global commodities exchanges. Consumers in these cities saw higher price tags on 24-karat fine gold, 22-karat jewelry gold, and 18-karat ornaments. In contrast, the industrial and retail silver segment displayed remarkable price consistency. Silver rates in both Chennai and Hyderabad remained static for the fifth consecutive day, holding firm at Rs. 2,55,000 per kilogram. Meanwhile, smaller denominations of the white metal traded at Rs. 25,500 per 100 grams, providing stability for buyers monitoring the physical metal space.
Global Spot Markets and Futures Performance
Overseas trading dynamics played a central role in driving domestic rate revisions. Spot gold gained 0.6% to touch $4,432.79 per ounce around 0432 GMT. United States gold futures tied to December delivery held relatively steady, settling at $4,478.40 per ounce. Simultaneously, spot silver demonstrated stronger upward momentum, advancing 1.2% to reach $66.96 per ounce, reinforcing the broader positive sentiment across precious metal exchanges worldwide.
Market Volatility and Central Bank Accumulation
Examining recent market movements, RiddiSiddhi Bullions Ltd. Managing Director, IBJA President, and Jain International Trade Organisation Chairman Prithviraj Kothari pointed out that gold experienced significant volatility during the previous week. The metal fell to a three-week low near $4,300 before staging a swift recovery past $4,540 following dovish commentary from the Federal Reserve. However, gold subsequently pulled back to $4,477 after a surprisingly strong August employment report renewed expectations of potential interest rate hikes, closing the week nearly flat with a slight contraction of 0.1%. Silver outperformed gold during the same period, finishing 0.8% higher near $66.30 per ounce.
Kothari further noted that geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz provided underlying support for bullion prices following renewed United States strikes against Iranian targets. Additionally, consistent central bank purchases continue to shore up long-term demand. The People's Bank of China recorded its 21st consecutive month of gold accumulation, while Poland added 82 tonnes of gold to its national reserves so far this year.
Technical Levels and Key Economic Indicators
Looking ahead, financial markets are closely watching upcoming economic datasets, including Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) figures due later this week. Kothari highlighted that gold's immediate price trajectory will depend heavily on inflation readings and ongoing geopolitical developments. From a technical perspective, gold faces immediate resistance in the range of $4,550 to $4,570 per ounce, while crucial support lies between $4,300 and $4,320 per ounce, a zone that must hold to maintain upward momentum. Should risk-off sentiment intensify, gold has potential upside room toward $68 to $69 per ounce, whereas weak market sentiment could trigger a decline toward initial key support around $63 to $64 per ounce.
