A deadly confrontation between the Tikhir and Yimkhiung communities in Nagaland's Kiphire district has resulted in the death of one person and left another wounded in an exchange of gunfire. Alongside the armed clash, several houses were set ablaze across local settlements. The district remains under intense tension, prompting law enforcement authorities to mobilize and position additional security forces across sensitive pockets to prevent further deterioration of law and order.
Dispute Over Festival Celebration Sparks Unrest
The unrest began in mixed villages shared by both tribes following a disagreement surrounding a festival being observed by members of the Tikhir community. What began as a dispute swiftly turned violent, culminating in gunfire on Saturday at Longtsunger. The exchange claimed one life and caused injuries to another individual. In Zaonger village, multiple properties and residences were torched as the unrest spread.
Prohibitory Orders Under BNSS Enforced
Fearing that the clashes could escalate into wider unrest and completely disrupt public peace, the district administration stepped in with legal curbs. Authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) covering parts of the Pungro sub-division. These orders restrict unlawful gatherings and movement, while security personnel continue extensive vigilance in vulnerable neighborhoods.
Leaders Call for Calm and Dialogue
Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton, who oversees the Home portfolio, issued an urgent appeal to both tribes to exercise restraint and work closely with administrative and security teams. Emphasizing conflict resolution through dialogue, he noted that differences between communities can only find durable solutions at the discussion table rather than through arms.
Echoing these concerns, the Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation (ENPO), the apex regional tribal body, appealed to all tribes across the region to preserve peace. ENPO president Chingmak Chang called upon the leadership of the Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribal councils to immediately step forward, halt any ongoing violence, and coordinate efforts to restore normal life in the affected villages.
