The Assam government has announced a festive financial boost for women across the state ahead of Durga Puja celebrations. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that beneficiaries registered under the state's flagship welfare initiative, the Orunodoi scheme, will receive an elevated payout for the month of October. Under this festive enhancement, the installment amount has been fixed at 1,500 rupees. The Chief Minister described this step as a dedicated festive offering to the women of Assam, highlighting that the additional financial backing aims to share in family preparations and festivities during the festive period.
Cabinet Approval at Lok Sewa Bhawan
The decision was formally cleared during an Assam cabinet meeting held at the Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati. Chaired by the Chief Minister on Thursday, the ministerial panel approved the temporary raise alongside several other public welfare decisions. Under the standard schedule of the Orunodoi program, eligible female recipients receive 1,250 rupees every month to support basic household expenses and strengthen household financial independence. For October, the state has added an extra 250 rupees to the disbursement. This one-time festive addition will directly reach approximately 40 lakh Orunodoi beneficiaries across every district of Assam.
Tea Garden Workers Secure Puja Bonus Along with Public Holiday
Beyond the direct cash transfer scheme, the cabinet introduced relief measures for industrial laborers and public servants. Eligible staff members of Assam Tea Corporation Limited, commonly known as ATCL, along with tea garden laborers, will receive a 20 percent Puja bonus. This announcement brings crucial seasonal financial relief to households dependent on the state's tea production sector. In another festive accommodation, the administration notified an additional government holiday on October 17 for state employees. With October 18 falling on Sunday, the extra holiday enables staff to plan uninterrupted participation in Durga Puja ceremonies.
Eligibility Norms Governing the Orunodoi Initiative
The Orunodoi program was instituted to provide consistent social welfare coverage to disadvantaged families by placing funds in the hands of women. The administrative guidelines mandate specific qualification benchmarks for applicant households
- Permanent Residency Status: The beneficiary family must be documented permanent residents of Assam and must presently reside within the territorial limits of the state.
- Adult Female Beneficiary Requirement: An adult female member aged 18 years or older is designated as the primary account holder. However, if a family includes a person with disabilities, that individual can be registered as the beneficiary irrespective of gender.
- Household Annual Income Threshold: The aggregate annual income of the entire applicant family must stay strictly below 2 lakh rupees, serving as the central economic cutoff for selection.
- Exclusion of Government Employee Households: Households where any family member holds employment in the government sector are routinely disqualified from receiving the benefit.
Documentation Framework for Direct Benefit Transfers
To guarantee leak-proof distribution of benefits directly into beneficiaries' bank accounts, specific verification documents are mandated. Every claimant must maintain an active Aadhaar card and an Aadhaar-linked bank account that fully complies with official KYC rules. Verification of age, citizenship, and residential standing requires standard documentation such as a voter identification card or an authorized domicile certificate. Finalizing the records also requires a recent passport-sized photograph alongside a functional mobile contact number linked to the registration.
