Bread, Salt and Vande Mataram: PM Modi Lands in Slovakia in a First-Ever Visit

After wrapping up his France trip, PM Narendra Modi arrived in Bratislava to a grand traditional welcome featuring 'bread and salt'. He is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Slovakia since the country came into being.

Having concluded his visit to France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now set foot on Slovak soil. The moment he landed in the capital, Bratislava, the warmth of the reception underlined just how much the ties between the two nations have deepened. What makes the trip especially significant is that Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to travel to Slovakia since the country emerged as an independent nation — a fact that turns this visit into a historic milestone in itself.

A Traditional Welcome of Bread and Salt

As soon as he arrived in Bratislava, Slovakia's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Juraj Blanár, received the Prime Minister. In keeping with local custom, Modi was presented with 'bread and salt'. Far from being a mere formality, this offering is regarded in Slovak tradition as a profound symbol of respect, goodwill and hospitality, and is considered one of the highest gestures of honour extended to a guest.

A Packed Day of Engagements

The real purpose of the trip is diplomatic. Later today, PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with his Slovak counterpart, with discussions expected to cover key areas such as trade, investment, defence and strategic cooperation. Following the talks, he will visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to lay a floral tribute and honour the soldiers who laid down their lives for the country.

The day's schedule does not end there. The Prime Minister will also take part in a special high-tea event held along the banks of the Danube river. As evening sets in, a crucial meeting with the President of Slovakia is lined up at the presidential palace. The day will draw to a close with a state banquet hosted by the President.

A Vande Mataram Performance That Won Hearts

The famed Slovak cultural group, the Lúčnica Ensemble, played a memorable part in the welcome. The artistes performed 'Vande Mataram', leaving everyone present deeply moved. The occasion offered a rare blend of Indian culture and Slovak folk traditions, becoming a symbol of the cultural closeness between the two countries. The Prime Minister met the performers in person and warmly praised their presentation.

A Wave of Excitement Among the Indian Community

There was tremendous enthusiasm among members of the Indian community living in Slovakia over Modi's visit. The instant the Prime Minister arrived, they greeted him with great fervour. Chants of 'Modi-Modi', 'Vande Mataram' and 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' rang out all around, making this historic moment all the more special.
