A cyclonic system over the Bay of Bengal has developed into cyclonic storm Arnab and is steadily gaining power over maritime waters. The upcoming two days are deemed critical for coastal belts as atmospheric conditions fuel the storm's intensification. Current meteorological projections indicate that the cyclone is likely to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh shoreline on the morning of October 28. During the impact, sustained wind speeds are estimated to range between 115 and 125 kilometres per hour, while severe gusts could surge up to 140 kilometres per hour. In view of these harsh conditions, a red alert has been enforced across coastal stretches of Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha.
Tracking Cyclone Arnab's Location and Severity
As of 5:30 am on Monday, the system was centered over the east-central and adjoining west-central sections of the Bay of Bengal. In terms of geographical markers, the cyclone was positioned roughly 590 kilometres north-west of Sri Vijaya Puram in Andaman and Nicobar. It was also situated approximately 650 kilometres east-south-east of Visakhapatnam. Weather monitoring assessments indicate that Arnab is likely to strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by the night of October 26. Following that escalation, the system is expected to intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm by October 27, prompting authorities to monitor sea-surface developments very closely.
Projected Landfall Zone Between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam
The system is forecast to chart a north-westerly path across the sea before crossing the coastlines of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on the morning of October 28. The designated impact corridor extends between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam. Landfall represents the critical meteorological phase when the circulating core of an oceanic storm transitions onto land. This event typically unleashes destructive gale winds, localized squalls, and severe weather fluctuations that present serious operational challenges to vulnerable coastal settlements.
Administrative Readiness and Marine Advisories
Addressing the imminent hazard, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has instructed government officials to maintain a 24-hour vigil and verify emergency contingencies to prevent extensive damage. With the storm progressing through severe and very severe classifications, continuous observation of shoreline habitats remains essential. Marine workers, fishermen, and seafaring vessels have been urged to suspend operations in open waters and strictly follow directives issued by local administrations and weather monitors.
Heavy Rainfall Inundates Parts of Tamil Nadu
Concurrently, the north-east monsoon is demonstrating robust activity across Tamil Nadu, compounding wet weather across the southern peninsula. Intermittent to heavy rainfall is expected to persist across segments of the state through October 27. In Dindigul district, Kodaikanal has experienced sustained wet spells for more than four days. Intense downpours on Sunday night triggered flash flooding in the Thoppikkanol vicinity, pushing rainwater inside homes. More than 50 families were severely impacted by the inundation, spending the night amid significant hardship as local officials track both the monsoon spell and the approaching cyclonic path.
