Furthermore, obtaining the reinstatement of the license will no longer be straightforward, as violators will be required to undergo a two-day mandatory training and counseling program upon completion of the suspension period.
The transport department has finalized its preparations, and the new mandate is set to be implemented as soon as official approval is granted. Previously, the duration for a license suspension was set at three months, which was later increased to six months. However, these adjustments did not yield the desired improvement in driver behavior. A persistent issue remains where individuals pay fines or wait out the suspension period, only to revert to the same dangerous driving habits once back on the road.
Mandatory Two-Day Training
Under the new protocol, drivers facing suspension must participate in a specialized two-day course to regain their driving rights. During this session, experts will provide comprehensive instruction on road safety standards, adherence to traffic regulations, secure driving techniques, the root causes of road accidents, and the essential responsibilities of a safe driver. The government intends to move beyond punitive measures to create a long-term behavioral shift in how motorists view safety.
25 to 30 Licenses Suspended Daily
Negligence on Delhi's roads remains high. On an average day, between 25 and 30 driving licenses are suspended across the capital for serious offenses such as excessive speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on the wrong side, and making hazardous turns. According to transport officials, motorists from Delhi are not only violating laws locally but are also flouting traffic rules in other states. The trend has become so significant that authorities in Rajasthan are sending daily recommendations to the Delhi transport department for the suspension of licenses registered in the capital.
Promoting Safety via 'Traffic Pathshala'
In parallel with stricter legal enforcement, the Delhi Traffic Police is running 'Traffic Pathshala' initiatives at major intersections to educate the public. These classroom sessions focus on explaining traffic signs and the importance of secure driving habits.
