In a touching display of human empathy, Rahul Jham and a group of dedicated volunteers from Numaish Camp in Saharanpur have been quietly performing the final rites for forgotten individuals across the city. Unclaimed bodies found on streets, outside hospitals, or in public spaces often pass away without a single relative to perform their last rites. Since 2019, this team has stepped in as surrogate family members, giving over 500 unclaimed deceased individuals a respectful cremation and a traditional farewell.
A Noble Initiative Born in 2019
The journey began in 2019 when Rahul Jham noticed the tragic reality of unclaimed mortal remains lying neglected at various cremation grounds throughout Saharanpur. Many homeless and destitute people live their lives in complete isolation and eventually pass away without anyone to claim their bodies or perform traditional funerary customs. Driven by a deep sense of social duty, Jham and his companions decided to take full responsibility for these forgotten souls.
The team regularly visits various cremation grounds in Saharanpur to carefully collect unclaimed ashes that have been stored for months. Following traditional rites, they transport these ashes to the holy town of Kankhal near Haridwar for immersion in the sacred Ganges river. Notably, the group operates without relying on public donations, government funds, or external monetary support. Every expenditure incurred for cremations, rituals, and transportation is raised internally by pooling financial contributions from the team members themselves.
Unwavering Commitment During the COVID-19 Pandemic
The true test of their dedication came during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when fear and strict health protocols gripped the nation. During a time when even close family members hesitatingly stayed away from touching the bodies of deceased loved ones due to fear of infection, this team remained on the frontlines. Day and night, they handled COVID-related cremations and managed unclaimed remains with complete devotion.
Despite working continuously in high-risk conditions during the worst waves of the pandemic, none of the team members contracted the virus. They credit this protection to a higher spiritual purpose and the selfless nature of their service. While many services came to a halt during lockdowns, their cremation and immersion work continued without interruption.
Restoring Dignity to Over 500 Departed Souls
Reflecting on their journey, Rahul Jham shares that seeing unclaimed remains left unattended at cremation sites deeply affected him. He felt that every human being, regardless of their status or circumstances in life, deserves a dignified departure from this world. This emotional drive transformed into an ongoing commitment that brings profound inner peace to everyone involved in the group.
To date, the team has successfully performed last rites and completed ash immersions at Kankhal for more than 500 unclaimed bodies. Their persistent efforts ensure that destitute individuals, who lived in obscurity and died unnoticed, receive the final honors and spiritual peace that every human being deserves.
