Climatologists had previously warned that rising sea surface temperatures associated with El Nino could weaken the Southwest Monsoon, potentially causing dry spells and moisture deficits. However, actual rainfall patterns tell a different story as atmospheric moisture remains abundant from Jammu and Kashmir down to Kerala, and stretching from Himachal Pradesh across to the Northeastern states. Plain and coastal regions, including Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha, are experiencing consistent precipitation. At the same time, intense rainfall has caused localized disruptions to daily life in states such as Kerala, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir.
Red Warnings Issued for Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand
To prepare residents for severe atmospheric instability, weather officials have elevated alert levels in several regions. High-priority Red Warnings have been assigned to specific districts in Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand due to the threat of heavy downpours, severe lightning, and destructive winds. In Andhra Pradesh, the alert covers Anakapalle, Visakhapatnam, and Vizianagaram, where squally winds reaching speeds of 60 km/h and intense rainfall exceeding 15 mm/h are anticipated. In Jharkhand, Red Warnings apply to Chatra, Hazaribagh, Latehar, and Lohardaga districts, alerting communities to potentially dangerous weather conditions.
Orange Alerts Spread Across Multiple States
Moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder has prompted Orange Alerts across numerous other districts nationwide. In the Northeast, Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, and West Khasi Hills are expecting moderate showers with lightning. In Southern India, wind speeds between 40 and 60 km/h along with moderate rains are predicted for Lakshadweep and several Kerala districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Kannur. Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Chennai districts, alongside Siddipet in Telangana, are also under alert protocols.
In Eastern India, Odisha's Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Khordha, and Cuttack districts face heightened vigilance. Northern mountainous belts are similarly on alert, including Uttarkashi, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Pauri Garhwal, and Dehradun in Uttarakhand, as well as Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Bilaspur, Solan, and Sirmaur in Himachal Pradesh. Central Indian states are witnessing extensive convective storm activity. In Madhya Pradesh, Orange Alerts encompass Rewa, Satna, Sidhi, Singrauli, Chhatarpur, Panna, Niwari, Tikamgarh, Anuppur, Dindori, Katni, Shahdol, and Umaria districts, where gusty winds and moderate rain are forecast. Neighboring Chhattisgarh is seeing similar conditions across Bastar, Bijapur, Dantewada, Sukma, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur, Surguja, Surajpur, Balrampur, Koriya, and Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi. In Jharkhand, additional districts under caution include Ranchi, Ramgarh, Garhwa, Palamau, and Gumla.
