A fatal accident at Punjab University in Chandigarh has claimed the life of a doctoral research scholar after she encountered live electric current while walking along a campus footpath. The deceased student, identified as Jyoti, was pursuing her PhD in Microbiology and resided in university accommodation. The unexpected tragedy has raised serious concerns regarding electrical safety standards across campus walkways.
Accident Occurred Between Student Hostels
According to gathered details, Jyoti was traveling from Hostel Number 8 toward Hostel Number 10 when the incident occurred. While walking along the designated pedestrian pathway, she suddenly sustained a high-voltage electric shock from the ground surface or nearby infrastructure. The force of the electrical discharge knocked her down several feet away. Onsite onlookers quickly rushed to her aid and transported her to a hospital, where medical staff confirmed her demise.
Uncertainty Over Cause and Ongoing Investigation
Medical authorities are examining whether the fatal outcome was triggered directly by the electric shock itself or due to critical physical injuries suffered during the heavy fall immediately after the shock. News of the incident triggered widespread distress and commotion among students and campus residents. Jyoti hailed from Mahendragarh, and her grieving family was left in severe shock upon receiving news of her sudden death. University officials and investigating authorities have initiated an inquiry to identify how live electricity reached the pedestrian walkway and to fix responsibility for any maintenance failure.
