The tragic shooting death of three Tamil individuals in the Chamarajnagar district of Karnataka has escalated into a major political confrontation between neighboring states. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay expressed strong opposition to the incident, dismissing the justification provided by the Karnataka Forest Department as completely unacceptable while demanding an impartial and thorough investigation into the entire episode.
Incidents Inside the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary
The incident unfolded in the early hours of August 15 within the boundaries of the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary. According to initial details, several suspected poachers had allegedly entered the forest area to hunt wildlife. Upon receiving this intelligence, a team from the forest department rushed to the location. Reports indicate that the suspects opened fire on the forest personnel, which subsequently triggered an armed confrontation in the form of retaliatory firing.
Casualties Identified and Materials Recovered
Three individuals lost their lives during the exchange of gunfire, and they were later identified as Anthony Sami, John Rose Peter, and Kumar. Police and forest authorities reported recovering a firearm along with various documents and other items from the site. Post-mortem examinations of the deceased are currently underway to ascertain the exact circumstances of their deaths.
Chief Minister Vijay Demands Accountability
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay took to social media to raise serious questions regarding the operation. He stated that three Tamil residents hailing from villages in the Hanur taluk of Chamarajnagar district were shot and killed by forest department officials inside the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, strongly condemning the use of lethal force. Vijay urged the Karnataka government to extend all possible assistance to the grieving families of the victims. He emphasized that the complete truth behind the operation must come to light through a rigorous inquiry.
D.K. Shivakumar Outlines Forest Department Account
Meanwhile, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that he received preliminary information about the incident at around 5 AM. He noted that forest officials briefed him on the initial findings at the scene. According to Shivakumar, forest personnel recovered guns and two bags filled with wild animal meat from the possession of the suspected poachers. He asserted that the suspects initiated the attack by firing at the forest staff, forcing them to retaliate in self-defense. Shivakumar also mentioned that one individual managed to escape from the scene during the exchange.
Magistrate Inquiry Ordered Amid Opposition Backlash
In response to the mounting pressure, the Karnataka government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Shivakumar stated that appropriate actions will follow based on the findings of the investigation and assured that compensation will be provided to the victims' families, though the exact amount has not yet been finalized. Concurrently, the opposition has stepped up criticism against the government. Leader of the Opposition Ashok questioned the nature of the police action, arguing that any defensive shooting should have targeted the legs rather than proving fatal in the chest area, while alleging that authorities submitted an incorrect report. The BJP has demanded a judicial probe instead of a standard magisterial investigation. Ultimately, the autopsy reports, recovered weaponry, and findings from the ongoing magisterial probe will determine what transpired inside the forest on that fateful morning and who initiated the hostilities.
