Mizoram Police has formally addressed and dismissed circulating social media claims alleging that a 15-year-old girl, whose lifeless body was discovered in the Lunglei district earlier this month, was killed by her own aunt. Authorities confirmed that no arrests have been executed so far, and the broader investigation into the circumstances surrounding the teenager's demise remains actively underway. An official spokesperson noted that a detailed statement will be released to the public as soon as investigators achieve a breakthrough in the ongoing probe.
Timeline of the Disappearance and Discovery
According to accounts shared by law enforcement, the young girl stepped out of her residence on August 3 at approximately 8.30 pm and failed to return home. Following her disappearance, local residents located her body on the morning of August 5 situated on the grounds of a government-run school located in Mualthuam North. In the immediate wake of this grim discovery, a formal case was registered at the Lunglei Police Station invoking Sections 103(1) and 140(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Formation of the Special Investigation Team
To ensure a thorough examination of the case, the Mizoram police department has established a dedicated three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT). This investigative unit operates directly under the supervision of Lunglei Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) R Lalthankima, tasked with dissecting every aspect leading up to the tragic incident.
Public Appeal for Cooperation
Law enforcement authorities have issued a direct appeal urging citizens to cooperate fully with the investigation and strictly refrain from propagating unverified rumours or social media posts that could potentially derail the probe. Anyone possessing credible information pertinent to the case has been invited to come forward and share it directly with the police department.
