A disturbing incident of vandalism occurred on Friday at a revered shrine in the Dilsukhnagar area of Hyderabad, where an individual barged into the Santoshi Mata temple situated near the local bus depot. Eyewitnesses and devotees present on the premises reported that a man, identified as Mohammed Ansari, entered the sanctum and abruptly began chanting slogans. Immediately following his shouts, he produced a wooden baton and unleashed strikes upon the consecrated idol of the deity, sending shockwaves through the temple hall.
At the time of the sudden intrusion, the temple priest and several devotees were actively engaged in religious rituals and prayers. Despite the immediate chaos and alarm caused by the violent disruption, the gathered crowd acted swiftly to overpower the assailant before he could inflict further damage. The devotees held him securely and alerted the Chaitanyapuri police station without delay. A police contingent arrived promptly at the spot, took the suspect into custody, and transferred him to the police station. Investigating officers are currently recording detailed statements from witnesses and temple staff who were present during the confrontation.
Police Inquiry and Psychiatric History Verification
Addressing the developments, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for LB Nagar confirmed that the individual in custody has been identified as Mohammed Ansari. The officer stated that initial findings indicate the suspect has been undergoing ongoing treatment for mental health conditions. As part of the formal investigation, law enforcement personnel have retrieved and documented his medical history and prescription records.
While the suspect remains in detention, investigators are working to ascertain the precise motive that drove him to enter the religious premises, raise slogans, and strike the idol with a stick. Police are examining whether the act was an outcome of acute psychological distress or if other underlying factors precipitated the aggression. Further legal procedures are actively progressing as authorities continue their probe into the timeline of events.
Public Outcry and Roadside Demonstrations by Outfits
As news regarding the defilement of the sacred idol circulated, tension rapidly mounted in and around the Dilsukhnagar locality. Members of various Hindu organizations along with leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party mobilized outside the Dilsukhnagar bus stand to register a strong protest. Demonstrators staged a sit-in across the roadway, voicing acute concerns regarding the safety protocols in place at places of worship and demanding stringent legal retribution against the apprehended suspect.
MLA T Raja Singh described the intrusion and physical assault on the shrine near the bus stop by Mohammed Ansari as deeply concerning. The legislator called upon the Telangana government to address the security vulnerabilities surrounding religious shrines, insisting on an impartial and exhaustive investigation into the incident. He asserted that if the suspect is proven culpable, the law must take its strictest possible course without leniency.
Opposition Leadership Challenges Police Narrative
Telangana BJP state president N Ramchander Rao reacted strongly to the episode, taking to social media to voice his sharp criticism. He wrote on X that a coordinated design lies behind repeated assaults on temples across Hyderabad, adding that official assertions attributing such actions to mental instability cannot be tolerated. He stated that the Santoshi Mata temple in the area was targeted deliberately in an attempt to desecrate the sacred image of the goddess.
Drawing attention to previous incidents, Ramchander Rao recalled a similar episode in Secunderabad where a deity idol was damaged under comparable circumstances. He asserted that this marks the seventh assault on Hindu temples since the Congress government took office in the state, emphasizing that shrines dedicated to mother goddesses have faced the brunt of these attacks. The political leader questioned why authorities routinely claim suspects are mentally unstable, arguing that if an individual is genuinely erratic, there is no explanation for why Hindu temples and goddess shrines are exclusively chosen as targets.
