A joyous wedding celebration turned into a horrifying tragedy in Odisha's Dhenkanal district late Wednesday night. A vehicle carrying seven young men suddenly lost control and plunged deep into a village pond, claiming the lives of five friends in a devastating drowning incident. Two occupants miraculously survived the terrifying ordeal after locals intervened, and they are currently receiving emergency medical care. The sudden loss of so many young lives has left the entire region in deep shock.
Midnight Disaster Strikes
The devastating road mishap unfolded in Chhatiya village, which falls strictly under the jurisdiction of the Dhenkanal Sadar police station. According to the preliminary timeline shared by local authorities, the group of youths had enthusiastically attended a marriage ceremony in the Indipur area earlier that evening. They were heading back home when disaster struck. During the fateful return journey, the person behind the wheel suddenly lost command over the vehicle's steering. The uncontrolled car violently veered off the regular path and nosedived directly into a roadside water body, trapping the passengers inside.
Police Confirm Victims' Identities
Law enforcement officials have officially released the identities of the deceased, confirming that all five victims were young men whose ages ranged between 20 and 25 years. The ill-fated group included the vehicle's driver, Chandrakant Swain, along with his companions Abhinash Sahu, Rakesh Sahu, and Sriram Sahu. These four young men hailed from Bangurisingh village, located within the Motunga region of the district. The fifth casualty, identified as Abhijit Sahu, was a resident of the nearby Siminai village. The bodies were recovered and sent for necessary procedures.
Villagers Launch Desperate Rescue
The deafening splash and the sound of the crash instantly alerted nearby residents in the dead of the night. Wasting no time, villagers immediately rushed toward the accident site and initiated a desperate rescue operation despite the pitch-black conditions. Displaying immense courage and after a grueling physical struggle in the murky water, the locals managed to break through and pull two passengers out of the sinking wreckage alive. Unfortunately, the other five individuals were trapped too deep; they could not be saved in time and tragically drowned before any meaningful help could reach them inside the rapidly submerging car.
Medical Treatment and Ongoing Probe
Following the harrowing extraction, the two rescued survivors, who sustained various injuries, were hurriedly transported to the Dhenkanal District Headquarters Hospital. Medical staff there continue to closely monitor their condition as their treatment remains ongoing. Meanwhile, local law enforcement has formally registered a case regarding the fatal midnight mishap. Investigators have commenced a thorough, multi-angle probe to determine the precise circumstances that caused the vehicle to career off the tarmac. While initial police assessments strongly suggest a simple loss of vehicular control by the driver, commanding officers maintain that the definitive cause will only become completely clear once the comprehensive investigation is concluded.
