In a major political development from Uttar Pradesh, Umashankar Singh, the sole Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) member of the state Legislative Assembly representing the Rasra constituency in Ballia, passed away on 05 August 2026 at a hospital in Delhi. He had been undergoing treatment for cancer for a considerable period before breathing his last. His demise marks a significant loss for his constituency and the state legislature, where he stood as the single elected representative of his party.
Tributes and Condolences from Key Political Figures
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav took to social media platform X to share his grief over the lawmaker's passing. Expressing deep sorrow, Yadav prayed for peace for the departed soul and extended heartfelt sympathies to the grieving family members. Earlier, during his prolonged treatment, BSP supremo Mayawati had personally visited him in the hospital on 06 March 2025 to inquire about his health and recovery.
Three-Term Legislative Legacy and Political Career
Umashankar Singh was widely recognized for his strong ground presence and popular support in eastern Uttar Pradesh. He achieved the distinction of being elected to the assembly from Rasra for three consecutive terms. Notably, during the 2022 assembly elections, when BSP managed to secure only a single seat out of 403 in Uttar Pradesh, Singh won on the strength of his personal connection with voters. Within political circles, he was related as an in-law (samdhi) to state Minister Dinesh Singh. His tenure also saw public political exchanges, such as on 07 August 2025, when a verbal tussle erupted between him and Minister Dayashankar Singh over local development projects in Ballia. Rising from humble beginnings and overcoming financial hardship, he had also established Chhatra Shakti, which grew into one of the prominent construction firms in the state.
Income Tax Investigation in February 2026
In early 2026, the legislator attracted widespread attention due to major financial scrutiny. On 25 and 26 February 2026, the Income Tax department conducted extensive raids at his residential premises and locations belonging to his close associates. Amid allegations of tax evasion amounting to nearly 1000 crore rupees, officials seized 11 crore rupees in cash along with luxury watches and jewelry from his residence, while approximately 10 crore rupees were recovered from associated locations. During the two-day operation, his son had posted updates on social media describing the ongoing situation inside their home.
Public Reaction: News of Umashankar Singh's passing brought widespread mourning across Ballia and the Rasra constituency, where residents and supporters remembered him as an accessible leader who consistently stood by the local population in times of need.
