In an apparent incident of honor killing, an 18-year-old woman was shot dead by her brother in Karachi's Orangi Town after entering into a marriage of choice. The victim had married the young man of her preference approximately three weeks ago and had been residing with him before she was persuaded to return to her parental house.
Lured Home Under the Pretext of a Wedding Reception
Mominabad Police Station SHO Shahbaz Yousuf confirmed the victim's identity as Zarka Bibi. According to police records, Zarka had tied the knot with her partner about three weeks prior and moved in with him to begin their married life. Once Zarka's family discovered the marriage, they initiated contact and convinced her to visit them, offering assurances that they intended to host a formal wedding celebration to mark the union properly.
Trusting her family's reassurances, Zarka arrived at her parents' house in Orangi Town on Sunday night. Shortly after her arrival, the atmosphere turned violent when her brother pulled out a weapon and shot her fatally before escaping from the residence.
Search Operations Underway for Absconding Suspect
Law enforcement authorities identified the suspected shooter as Safeer Khan. Following alerts about gunfire inside the home, police personnel arrived at the crime scene and shifted Zarka's body to a nearby hospital, where a postmortem examination and related legal documentation were carried out.
SHO Shahbaz Yousuf stated that specialized police units are conducting raids across suspected hideouts to locate and arrest Safeer Khan. Investigators have initiated a detailed inquiry into the killing to establish the precise chain of events and determine the extent to which other family members may have colluded in planning or facilitating the crime.
Pattern of Target Killings Against Choice Marriages
Such fatal attacks highlight a persistent pattern in Pakistan where women and men face violent retribution from relatives for entering relationships or marriages against family consent. Earlier this year in May, another young couple was assassinated in Karachi under remarkably similar circumstances shortly after solemnizing their marriage.
On May 25, unidentified armed assailants opened fire on a vehicle in the Malir neighborhood, killing 20-year-old Nadia and 25-year-old Najibullah. Investigators determined that the attack appeared prima facie to be an act of honor killing. Before that ambush, Nadia's father, identified as Aslam, had lodged an alleged kidnapping complaint regarding his daughter on May 19.
The newlywed couple later appeared before a court in Malir to submit their valid marriage certificate. After the relevant paperwork was verified, the legal dispute was officially settled, resulting in the release of Najibullah's father from detention. However, as the couple traveled toward a NADRA facility following the court proceedings, gunmen ambushed their car. While two occupants, including the driver, managed to survive the attack, Nadia and Najibullah were killed on the spot.
Similar Double Murder Reported in Upper Kohistan
The menace of honor killings continues to emerge across multiple regions. In July, another lethal incident occurred in the Jalkot area of Upper Kohistan within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. A police constable and a 22-year-old woman were shot dead after the woman's family discovered their relationship. According to official findings, the woman's relatives first executed her and subsequently tracked down and killed the policeman. Police squads were subsequently deployed to trace and apprehend the individuals named in the double murder case.
