Kolkata's Jadavpur University continues to remain tense following a violent clash between ABVP and SFI supporters last week. Amidst this volatile atmosphere, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has raised serious concerns over anti-national wall graphics and drawings discovered inside the campus. The Chief Minister has directed state university authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and conduct an on-ground physical verification of students. This directive comes immediately after a crucial meeting called by University Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharya with all stakeholders concluded late Monday night without reaching any definitive conclusion.
Chief Minister Directs Hostel Inspection and Strict Action
Sharing a video post on the social media platform X, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated that the Chief Minister's Office had received complaints from a group of Jadavpur students regarding the incident. These grievances were accompanied by photographs of anti-national and objectionable graffiti found on campus walls. Several controversial images were specifically traced inside the boys' hostel of the Arts Department. The Chief Minister firmly declared that such anti-national activities cannot be allowed to continue within any educational institution and directed the Higher Education Department and the Vice-Chancellor to initiate an immediate inquiry.
Reiterating a policy of zero tolerance toward anti-national actions, Suvendu Adhikari emphasized that the state government will not compromise on the security and dignity of campuses. Following the recent unrest at Jadavpur, his message to the university administration has been unsparing. He instructed relevant authorities to immediately inspect the Arts Department boys' hostel at the ground level and take swift administrative steps to address the violation.
Educational Institutions as Sanctuaries of Nation-Building
The Chief Minister stressed on social media that educational institutions are sacred spaces meant strictly for learning, academic excellence, and nation-building. Under no circumstances will campus grounds be permitted to serve as platforms for distorted propaganda or the propagation of anti-India sentiments. He urged the Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, the Principal Secretary of the Higher Education Department, and other concerned officials to launch an immediate investigation into the allegations.
The directives explicitly state that authorities must first conduct a physical inspection of the Arts Division boys' hostel area to verify the presence of such inappropriate wall graffiti. If the existence of these anti-national messages and distorted paintings is confirmed, immediate steps must follow to erase the graffiti, fix accountability, and initiate rigorous administrative and legal proceedings against the culprits. The government and university administration must ensure that institutional rules are strictly enforced and academic dignity is strictly preserved.
