A tragic incident has unfolded in New York City, where a 28-year-old young man from Punjab was shot and killed. The victim was out on a pizza delivery job when an unidentified assailant opened fire on him in the Brooklyn neighborhood. Initial information suggests that the fatal shooting may have stemmed from an attempted robbery.
Roots in Kapurthala Village
The deceased has been identified as Gurdeep Singh, a native of Jabowal village located in Punjab's Kapurthala district. According to his family, Gurdeep arrived in the United States back in 2017. He had undertaken the journey to America using the donkey route, a term commonly used to describe crossing through various transit nations to enter a developed country via unofficial channels.
A Decade Away From Home
Life presented numerous hardships for Gurdeep after reaching American soil. He was working as a delivery partner in New York and legally possessed an American work permit. Relatives shared that he had not visited his home country for nearly nine years. His father, Pyara Lal, revealed that the family had taken on a massive debt to finance his trip abroad. Even after arriving, his journey remained arduous as he worked tirelessly day and night to build a better future.
Community Condemnation and Demands
Following the killing of Gurdeep, the Punjabi Association of America voiced profound concern over the escalating violence. The organization emphasized that this tragedy should not simply be brushed aside as just another routine crime. They pointed out that every time a young person loses their life, an entire household is ruined, stressing that recurring violence must not be allowed to become normalized.
NAPA has urged law enforcement to uncover the true motives behind the murder and conduct an impartial probe. The organization further cautioned against rushing to conclusions before the investigation reaches its logical completion.
Recent Killing of Gujarati Businessman in Tennessee
Just days prior to Gurdeep Singh's death, another Indian businessman was shot dead in the state of Tennessee. Suresh Parasotamdas Patel, a 62-year-old Gujarati businessman, was gunned down inside his store in Jackson city. His 19-year-old daughter was present at the store when the incident transpired.
Reports indicate that on August 20, a masked intruder entered Patel's shop, grabbed cash from the cash drawer, and shot Suresh Patel, causing him to die on the spot. Suresh Patel hailed from Akhaj village in Gujarat's Mehsana district and had been living in the United States for around 30 years. He had established his new business venture in Jackson merely a week before the tragic event occurred.
