Preparations have been finalized for the assembly by-election in the Datia constituency of Madhya Pradesh. A total of 21 candidates are competing for the seat, with more than 2.20 lakh voters set to cast their ballots on Thursday, July 30. Following the end of public campaigning on Tuesday evening, election authorities and local administration have put comprehensive security arrangements in place to ensure peaceful voting. Vote counting will take place on Sunday, August 3, to determine the winner.
Polling Stations and Voter Demographics
According to official electoral figures, the Datia assembly constituency has 2,20,344 registered voters. The electorate comprises 1,16,088 male voters and 1,04,246 female voters who are eligible to participate in the voting process. To facilitate smooth balloting across the area, the Election Commission has set up 291 polling stations. Among these, 186 polling booths are situated in rural parts of the constituency, while 105 booths are located within urban boundaries.
Security Measures and Law Enforcement
Comprehensive security arrangements have been implemented throughout the constituency to maintain law and order. Datia Superintendent of Police Mayur Khandelwal confirmed that security personnel have been positioned across key locations, and a dedicated control room has been activated. According to Mayur Khandelwal, "Prompt action will be taken on every complaint received at the control room." Law enforcement agencies are maintaining strict surveillance over suspicious individuals, and authorities warned that anyone attempting to disrupt the polling process will face stern legal consequences. Citizens have been urged to exercise their franchise without any fear.
Key Contestants and Political Dynamics
The electoral contest features 21 candidates representing various political parties and independent slots. The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Ashutosh Tiwari, who has a background with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. The Congress party has nominated Ghanshyam Singh as its candidate. Meanwhile, Damodar Singh Yadav of the Azad Samaj Party is also actively contesting, making it a potential three-way battle. Alongside these three figures, 18 other candidates are in the fray, who could significantly sway the voting mathematics and outcome for major contenders.
Background of the By-Election
The necessity for this by-election arose following legal developments involving the former representative of the seat. In the 2023 Madhya Pradesh assembly elections, Congress candidate Rajendra Bharti defeated the state's then Home Minister Narottam Mishra by a margin of over 7,500 votes. However, in April, a Delhi court convicted Rajendra Bharti in a fraud case and sentenced him to three years in prison. This conviction led to his disqualification from the state assembly, rendering the Datia seat vacant despite Bharti later securing bail. For this by-poll, the Bharatiya Janata Party opted not to re-nominate Narottam Mishra, choosing instead to back Ashutosh Tiwari.
