A major political development has unfolded as the Election Commission of India has imposed a complete restriction on the official name and traditional election symbol of the All India Trinamool Congress. Through an interim order, authorities have made it clear that neither of the rival factions led by key political figures will be permitted to utilize the original party identity in the upcoming assembly by-elections. This strict regulatory measure has created an urgent need for both camps to reevaluate their strategy while the overarching dispute remains under formal review.
Interim measures for ongoing by-elections
With the assembly by-elections already underway, election officials noted that a thorough and definitive settlement of the core dispute requires extensive time that is currently unavailable. To maintain absolute fairness and neutrality during the active electoral process, authorities invoked paragraph 15 of the Election Symbols Reservation and Allotment Order. This interim arrangement ensures that neither side gains an unfair advantage from using the established party banner while legal and administrative deliberations continue.
Mandate for new names and free symbols
Under the strict parameters of the commission order, neither faction is permitted to independently use the title of the All India Trinamool Congress for campaigning or ballot purposes. While candidates are given the minor option to link a reference of the original organization to their newly adopted titles, the primary nomenclature must change. Furthermore, both rival groups have been completely stripped of the right to use the reserved grass and flowers symbol. Instead, they are required to select fresh identifiers from the list of notified free symbols, with a strict deadline set for 18 September 2026 at 11 am to submit their preferences.
Origins of the internal party rebellion
The roots of this severe institutional crisis trace back to an internal revolt initiated when a petition was formally lodged before the regulatory authority. The petitioner claimed that the tenure of the national executive committee had formally expired on 11 February 2025, stripping that specific body of any legal authority to take decisions. Documentation presented to officials pointed toward a special convention held on 22 June 2026, during which a leadership transition reportedly took place and a new president was chosen for the national executive committee.
In sharp contrast, the camp led by Mamata Banerjee forcefully rejected all such claims and dismissed the internal maneuvers as entirely illegitimate. Legal representatives and delegates acting for this faction argued before the authority that the meeting organized by the dissident leaders was completely unconstitutional and fabricated. They maintained that every appointment and resolution emerging from that gathering violated the internal party constitution, urging officials to disregard the correspondence submitted by the rival group.
Following intense arguments from both sides, the regulatory body summoned the respective delegations to New Delhi on 17 September. Officials listened to the presentations from the first faction at three in the afternoon, followed immediately by the opposing delegation at four in the evening. After examining extensive documentation and legal submissions from both camps, the senior commissioners concluded that the matter warranted detailed scrutiny under paragraph 15, keeping the interim restrictions firmly in place until a final verdict is reached.
