Tensions surrounding the Maratha reservation issue have escalated once again in Maharashtra as activist Manoj Jarange issued a direct warning of serious consequences to the state government. Accusing authorities of attempting to intimidate the Maratha community, Jarange stated that while his supporters have no inherent interest in staging demonstrations in Mumbai if their rights are granted, any failure by the government could lead to an unprecedented shutdown. He warned that if a decision is taken to march to the state capital, between 80 to 90 lakh youth could assemble, potentially halting both railway services and flight operations.
Ultimatum on Maratha Quota and the August 28 Deadline
Firmly rejecting appeals from the Maharashtra government for reconsideration, Manoj Jarange outlined the timeline for the upcoming agitation. He set August 28 as the final deadline for the administration to fulfill and implement the Maratha community reservation demands. Should the government fail to act within this timeframe, Jarange announced that he will commence an indefinite hunger strike on August 29 at Antarwali Sarati village located in Jalna district.
Threat of Transport Disruption Across Mumbai
Addressing questions regarding alleged Mumbai Police orders restricting public rallies and demonstrations, Manoj Jarange criticized administrative high-handedness. He warned that if the government acts arbitrarily and forces the Maratha community to move toward Mumbai, protesters will not hesitate to disrupt essential infrastructure, including pulling up railway tracks and grounding flights. He emphasized that administrative restrictions would not deter millions from gathering to demand their rights.
Kunbi Caste Certificates and the 58 Lakh Records Demand
Highlighting the core grievances behind the protest, Manoj Jarange alleged that the state government is attempting to reduce the number of eligible Maratha members who receive Kunbi caste certificates. He demanded that certificates be issued swiftly based on the 58 lakh previously identified records. Jarange further reiterated his earlier stance that any betrayal regarding the Maratha quota issue would result in political consequences during upcoming elections.
Proposed Protest Venues in Mumbai and Future Course
Should the demonstration move to Mumbai, protesters plan to gather at key prominent locations across the city. According to Manoj Jarange, participants could stage demonstrations at Azad Maidan, Shivaji Park, or directly outside Varsha, the official residence of the Chief Minister. He maintained that the struggle is dedicated to securing long-pending rights for the Maratha community across Maharashtra and will continue until those demands are fully met.
