Rather than centering solely on agricultural water shortages, the gathering became a major talking point due to remarks that critics and opposition parties described as having double meanings involving a well-known film actress.
The Incident Involving Slogans and Remarks
As the political leader was addressing the crowd and criticizing Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay regarding government policies and the handling of state affairs, sections of the audience started chanting the name of actress Trisha. Amidst these persistent slogans, the speaker paused, smiled, and made a remark that many observers interpreted as a reference to the actress, who is known to be a close associate and frequent co-star of the Chief Minister, given ongoing social media discussions surrounding their relationship. Although the speaker subsequently smiled and clarified that his words were directed toward the flow of Cauvery river water reaching its destination, the clarification failed to quell the escalating backlash.
Political Opposition Slams the Rhetoric
Following the emergence of the viral video, legislators from rival parties expressed intense outrage. A lawmaker from Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam strongly condemned the remarks, labeling them as extremely cheap and completely unacceptable. The critic alleged that the ruling political establishment continues to lower the standard of public discourse by deliberately employing provocative language. Furthermore, it was claimed that the protest lacked genuine grassroots support and relied on cheap provocations simply to capture media attention online, warning that persistent arrogance would ultimately diminish the party's public standing.
BJP Demands Action and Criticizes Leadership Silence
The Bharatiya Janata Party also entered the fray, describing the remarks as vile, obscene, vulgar, and shameful. A state spokesperson for the party criticized the silence of former Chief Minister MK Stalin on the matter and demanded immediate legal action and the arrest of the speaker, arguing that decisive steps would uphold public decency. Party representatives asserted that the incident represents a new low in political culture, reinforcing the notion that the public has rejected such behavior due to continuously declining standards in political messaging.
