A family dispute in Sangha village of Punjab's Tarn Taran district turned deadly when a man who had gone to persuade his estranged wife to return home was allegedly set on fire by his own brother-in-law, and the sister-in-law who rushed to save him also lost her life. CCTV visuals of the incident are now circulating widely on social media.
Why The Husband Had Gone To His In-Laws' House
The deceased has been identified as Lavpreet Singh, a resident of Lopoke village in Amritsar district. Police said Lavpreet's wife, Sandeep Kaur, had left home following a dispute and was staying with her parents in Sangha village. On Saturday, Lavpreet travelled to his in-laws' house hoping to convince her to return with him.
A heated argument broke out during the visit, and the situation quickly spiralled out of control. Sandeep Kaur's brother, Sajan Singh, allegedly poured flammable oil over Lavpreet Singh in a fit of rage and set him alight.
Sister-In-Law's Rescue Attempt Also Ends In Tragedy
Flames engulfed Lavpreet Singh within moments. Hearing the commotion, Sajan Singh's sister-in-law, Gurjeet Kaur, also a resident of Sangha village, ran to help him but suffered severe burns herself in the attempt. Lavpreet Singh died on the spot, while Gurjeet Kaur succumbed to her injuries during treatment at the hospital. Sajan Singh himself was also burnt in the incident and has been admitted to hospital for treatment.
Entire Incident Captured On CCTV
A CCTV camera installed near the spot recorded the entire sequence of events. Police have seized the footage, and the video that has gone viral on social media is being examined separately.
Murder Case Registered, Accused Arrested
Sadar police station officers rushed to the spot as soon as they were informed, took both bodies into custody and sent them for post-mortem examination. SHO Navdeep Singh said the main accused in the case is Sajan Singh, who poured petrol on his brother-in-law Lavpreet and set him on fire, leaving him roughly 90 percent burnt and resulting in his death. He said Gurjeet Kaur, who rushed to save Lavpreet, was also caught in the flames and died as a result.
Police have registered a murder case against Sajan Singh under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He has been arrested in connection with the two deaths and sent to judicial custody. The double death has left Sangha village and the surrounding area in shock, with a family dispute wiping out the happiness of two households in a matter of moments.
