In a disturbing incident highlighting security challenges in Punjab, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sukhchain Singh, posted at the Ajnala police station in Amritsar district, was targeted in a sudden gun attack by unidentified assailants. The incident took place when Sukhchain Singh was travelling back home after completing his routine duty. Before he could reach his residence near Jagdev Khurd, armed attackers intercepted his path and unleashed indiscriminate firing aimed directly at him.
Sustains Bullet Injury, Admitted to Civil Hospital
During the sudden barrage of gunfire, one of the bullets grazed ASI Sukhchain Singh's arm, causing injuries. The impact left the police officer wounded at the spot, while the attackers quickly fled the scene. Following the shooting, he was immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital in Ajnala for emergency medical attention and first-aid.
A team of doctors at the hospital took charge of his medical care. Attending physicians confirmed that the officer's condition is currently stable and out of immediate danger. Senior police personnel reached both the hospital and the crime scene shortly after receiving the alert. Law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the vicinity, initiated a comprehensive probe, and deployed teams to identify the gunmen and establish the motive behind the targeted assault.
Previous Gunfire Outside DSP Office in Jalalabad
This attack follows another audacious shooting incident reported earlier in Punjab's Jalalabad, where armed youths targeted the local Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) office. In that incident, a group of young men riding on 3 to 4 motorcycles approached from the Lal Batti Chowk direction and opened fire right outside the DSP premises.
Immediately after firing the shots, some of the assailants even attempted to force their entry into the government office complex, but were overpowered by alert police personnel on duty. The City Jalalabad police arrested two youths on the spot. The apprehended individuals were identified as Sona Singh alias Sonu, a resident of Ameer Khas, and Aakash, son of Paramjit, hailing from the Vairoka police station jurisdiction. An illegal.32 bore pistol was recovered from their possession.
Temple Land Dispute and Property Angles Under Lens
According to City Jalalabad Station House Officer Mohit Dhawan, police moved swiftly upon receiving distress alerts regarding the gunfire, capturing two suspects while their accomplices managed to escape during the ensuing chaos. Dedicated police units were formed and dispatched across multiple locations to track down the absconding suspects. Official records confirmed one round of live fire at the spot, and technical experts were tasked with examining the exact weapon used.
Preliminary findings in the Jalalabad incident point toward a dispute involving local temple management, internal animosity, and controversies surrounding the construction of commercial shops on temple-owned land. Investigating officers are scrutinising the legal framework of the temple trust and its real estate assets. Detailed interrogations of the detained suspects are expected to reveal further connections and lead to additional enforcement action against the perpetrators.
