A tragic road collision in the Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab on Sunday resulted in two deaths, including a minor, and left 16 other individuals injured. The incident occurred when a goods carrier transporting a group of pilgrims bound for Haridwar overturned after colliding with a truck. Emergency medical personnel and local responders rushed the injured victims to nearby hospitals, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
Tragedy Strikes Near Madhopur Village
The pilgrims had embarked on their trip from Ludhiana in Punjab and were traveling toward the holy city of Haridwar in Uttarakhand. The group was traveling in the goods-carrying vehicle with the intent of taking a sacred dip in the Ganga river. However, as the vehicle neared Madhopur village within the Fatehgarh Sahib area, it collided head-on with a truck. The severe impact of the crash caused the loaded vehicle to lose balance and flip over on the highway, trapping several occupants inside.
Casualties and Police Investigation
Providing details on the casualty figures, Assistant Sub-Inspector Tilak Raj from the Sirhind Police Station confirmed that a 28-year-old man and a 12-year-old child died in the accident. Police authorities secured the area, retrieved the bodies, and transported them to the local mortuary for post-mortem examinations. Law enforcement officials stated that family members of the deceased are being identified and informed, and the bodies will be handed over following completion of the required legal procedures. Meanwhile, hospital medical teams continue to monitor the conditions of the 16 surviving injured passengers.
Recurring Road Mishaps in Fatehgarh Sahib
The district of Fatehgarh Sahib has seen similar serious road traffic incidents in recent months. Earlier in April, a major bus accident took place in the same region when a vehicle carrying between 35 and 40 passengers struck an electric pole and rolled over. That April crash caused five instant deaths on the spot and left over 15 people injured. On that occasion, prompt action by local residents helped transport the injured to medical centers across Fatehgarh Sahib and Bassi Pathana. The practice of using commercial goods vehicles for passenger travel along highway routes remains a recurring safety issue across the region.
