Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot visited the national capital on Wednesday to offer his condolences in person to the grieving family of late former legislator Atar Singh Bhadana. The meeting took place at Bhadana's residence situated in Delhi's Bhati Mines area. Following the condolence visit, the senior leader is scheduled to head back to Jaipur later the same evening.
Deadly Altercation at Bharatpur Stone Crusher Facility
The incident stems from a violent attack that occurred on the evening of October 11 at a stone crusher unit located in Bhonda village, within Rajasthan's Bharatpur district. The former lawmaker had reportedly been in a persistent dispute with local villagers over reopening the facility. The confrontation escalated rapidly when an aggressive group attacked him and his associate Gagan Sharma with wooden sticks and rods. Due to the critical nature of his injuries, Bhadana was initially rushed to a local hospital before being shifted to the Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur, where medical staff pronounced him dead upon arrival. Sharma also sustained injuries during the assault.
Simmering Mining Conflict and Ongoing Police Probe
The root of the conflict appears tied to enduring friction regarding stone crushing activities and mining operations in the locality. Residents had expressed firm opposition to resuming plant operations, alongside raising accusations related to illegal mining and land encroachments. In response to a formal complaint filed by the victim's family, law enforcement authorities initiated a manhunt to trace and detain the perpetrators. Several suspects have already been taken into custody for questioning, and investigators are actively analyzing footage recovered from a digital video recorder, or DVR, retrieved from the crime scene to reconstruct the timeline.
Scrutiny over Administrative Vigilance and Law Enforcement
The fatal assault has drawn sharp political criticism, with Gehlot previously challenging the state government over lapses in maintaining law and order. He questioned why local police and civil authorities failed to take proactive preventive measures despite knowing about the prolonged hostility in the area. His direct visit to Bhadana's household in Delhi underscores the continued political sensitivity surrounding the incident and its broader implications for regional security administration.
