When discussing the evolving role of women within the Indian Army, the name of Captain Shiva Chauhan stands out prominently. Hailing from Udaipur, Rajasthan, she scripted history in January 2023 when she was posted for operational duties at the Siachen Glacier, the highest and most challenging battlefield in the world. As the first female officer to achieve this milestone, her story serves as a beacon of inspiration for millions of young women aspiring to wear the uniform and serve their nation.
Early Struggles and Family Strength
The path to success was not easy for Captain Shiva Chauhan. Born and raised in Udaipur, she faced a major personal tragedy at the tender age of 11 when her father passed away. This event placed the entire burden of running the household on her mother. During these testing times, her elder sister became her pillar of support, significantly contributing to the development of her self-confidence. Despite the hardships, her family stood firmly behind her childhood dream of becoming an officer in the Indian Army, providing her with the encouragement needed to pursue her goals against all odds.
Transitioning from Engineering to the Army
After completing her early education in Udaipur, Shiva earned her B.Tech degree in Civil Engineering from the Techno NJR Institute of Technology in 2020. This technical background proved instrumental in her responsibilities within the Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army. This branch is responsible for critical tasks such as constructing bridges, setting up military infrastructure, clearing landmines, and providing technical support in remote, hostile environments. She chose to pursue the Short Service Commission and succeeded in her very first attempt. In March 2020, she passed the interview at 19 SSB Allahabad, securing All India Rank-1, a testament to her decision-making abilities and natural leadership qualities.
Military Training and Early Assignments
Following her success at the SSB, Shiva underwent rigorous training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai. There, she excelled in physical fitness, discipline, and leadership modules. Upon receiving her commission in May 2021, she was posted with the 'Fire and Fury Corps,' which operates in the challenging terrains of Northern India. During her initial postings in the high-altitude regions of Ladakh, she gained valuable experience in handling extreme weather conditions and difficult border environments, which caught the attention of her senior officers.
Preparation for Siachen
In July 2022, on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, she led the 'Sura Soei Cycling Expedition.' This mission spanned 508 kilometers, covering a path from the Siachen War Memorial to the Kargil War Memorial in 11 days, traversing terrains between 9,000 to 12,000 feet. This expedition proved that she possessed the necessary physical and mental fortitude. Before her deployment to Siachen, she underwent specialized training at the Siachen Battle School, where she trained alongside male counterparts in ice-wall climbing, glacier survival, avalanche rescue, and operating in thin-oxygen environments.
Operational Duty at the Highest Battlefield
On January 2, 2023, Captain Shiva Chauhan was deployed to the Kumar Post, situated at an altitude of 15,632 feet, for a three-month operational tenure. In temperatures that can drop to minus 50 degrees Celsius, she led her team of engineers. Her responsibilities included the construction and maintenance of helipads and essential military infrastructure, alongside managing the morale and operational readiness of the soldiers under her command. Facing constant threats like deep crevasses, avalanches, and extreme frostbite, she successfully overcame these natural hazards to become the first female officer to perform operational duty at this post.
