Serious questions have been raised regarding the safety of foreign visitors in Rajasthan's renowned tourist town of Mandawa, located in the Jhunjhunu district, after a youth openly snatched a mobile phone from a German tourist and attempted to flee. Fortunately, thanks to the prompt alertness of the foreign tourist and the swift response of local residents, the accused was chased down, captured, and the mobile phone was safely recovered and handed back. The entire brazen incident was recorded on a nearby CCTV camera, and the footage has now surfaced, drawing widespread attention to security gaps.
The German Delegation's Heritage Tour
According to available details, a delegation of about 20 members from Germany had arrived in the town to explore the historic havelis, traditional murals, and architectural heritage sites of Mandawa. While the tourists were taking a walking tour through the town area, an unknown youth suddenly lunged forward, snatched a mobile phone right out of a German tourist's hand, and bolted away at high speed. The sudden attack left the tourist startled for a moment, but gathering courage, the victim immediately started running after the culprit. Seeing the tourist chase the thief, shopkeepers and local citizens operating nearby quickly grasped the situation and joined in the pursuit. Within a short distance, the public managed to corner the accused, retrieved the mobile phone from his possession, and returned it to the German visitor.
Concerns Over Security Despite Official Force
It is worth noting that given the continuous influx of foreign tourists into Mandawa, the police and tourism department have specifically deployed two personnel from the Tourist Help Force. Despite this arrangement, authorities have failed to effectively curb the activities of touts and antisocial elements who constantly hover around visitors. Following this alarming incident, local merchants and people associated with the tourism business are filled with deep resentment. They argue that such criminal acts severely tarnish Mandawa's reputation on the international stage. Local residents have strongly demanded an increase in security patrols throughout Mandawa and strict legal action against suspicious individuals who harass tourists.
