A significant step towards environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture has been achieved in Karauli with the official completion of the district's very first high-tech model nursery. Constructed at an estimated overall expense of around Rs 1.50 crore, this state-of-the-art botanical facility is strategically situated on forest department land within the Bijalpur Gram Panchayat, right along the bustling Karauli-Gangapur National Highway.
Spanning a massive geographical footprint of roughly 20 hectares, the expansive center is specifically geared towards the mass production of flora. By leveraging advanced agricultural science, the department has already successfully cultivated approximately two lakh young plants. Following this initial success, the forest department has officially commenced the distribution phase, making these saplings available to the general public and local organizations.
Advanced Agricultural Techniques
To ensure the highest possible survival rate and rapid growth, the infrastructure boasts 10 specialized mother beds alongside 105 standard cultivation beds. Agricultural experts at the site are employing specialized root-shoot methods and precision grafting techniques immediately following the crucial seed germination phase. The entire compound is heavily fortified with a secure boundary wall to protect the delicate plants from stray animals and trespassers.
Furthermore, the nursery is equipped with a wide array of modern amenities designed to streamline the cultivation process. These include a dedicated seed storage unit, a protective greenhouse, large water reservoirs, and an automated sprinkler irrigation network that ensures optimal moisture levels without wasting valuable water resources.
Diverse Plant Species and Organic Growth
Currently, the model nursery is actively nurturing an impressive collection of 22 distinct species of flora. This diverse selection encompasses a healthy mix of fruit-bearing trees, flowering plants, and large shade-providing trees. Prominent varieties available to buyers include mango, guava, Indian blackberry (jamun), tamarind, drumstick, ber, neem, kachnar, amla, and the resilient khejri tree. For those looking for ornamental additions, champa, kaner, rose, marigold, mogra, and kalpavriksha are also being cultivated.
A major highlight of this facility is its commitment to organic farming practices. The on-site greenhouse is heavily utilized to produce organic vermicompost manure. This natural fertilizer plays a vital role in maintaining essential soil fertility and ensuring the resulting saplings are of superior quality, capable of yielding flowers and fruits much faster than those grown using traditional chemical methods.
Subsidized Pricing and Future Goals
In a strong bid to encourage widespread public participation in local afforestation efforts, the high-quality saplings are priced extremely reasonably. Plants measuring up to two feet in height are being sold directly to consumers for a nominal fee of just Rs 6, while taller saplings exceeding the two-foot mark cost Rs 10 each. To maximize accessibility, both online and offline purchasing channels have been opened to the public.
Moreover, official government departments embarking on public green initiatives are eligible for up to a 50 percent financial grant on bulk purchases, adhering to departmental rules. According to forest officials, locals previously had to travel to neighboring districts to procure premium saplings, a hurdle that has now been completely eliminated. Looking ahead, the department has set an ambitious target to prepare approximately 2.5 lakh new saplings every single year, promising to drastically improve Karauli's overall green cover and ecological health.
