Located near the railway station within the Shri Roop Smarak complex in the town of Nawalgarh, Jhunjhunu district, stands an ancient temple that holds a special place due to its rich historical legacy and unique translucent Shivling. Dating back approximately 96 years, this revered shrine serves as a major focal point of faith for the local community. The defining feature of this temple is the transparent Shivling crafted from crystalline stone installed inside the sanctum. Formed from white sphatik, this striking Shivling acts as the primary attraction, drawing numerous devotees from distant places seeking its blessings.
Construction of the Historical Shrine in 1930
The construction of this historical temple took place in the year 1930. Following the passing of Nawalgarh ruler Thakur Roop Singh, his adopted son Rawal Madan Singh commissioned the building of this temple in his hallowed memory. Built during that era, the temple preserves its ancient architectural style and profound religious significance to this day. In contemporary times, the Shri Roop Smarak complex has housed the Shri Roop Rajput Hostel for many years, ensuring that the premises remain vibrant and well-maintained.
Splendor of the Sanctum Sanctorum and Artistic Frescoes
Inside the inner sanctum of the temple, alongside the crystal Shivling, beautiful idols of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati, Lord Kartikeya, and Nandi have been installed. The ornamental canopy situated directly above the sanctum also draws the attention of visitors. The four corners of this canopy feature glass-embedded images of Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna, Lord Hanuman, and Lord Garuda. Furthermore, portraits of former Nawalgarh rulers adorn the sanctum walls, highlighting the historical importance of the site. The walls of the veranda surrounding the sanctum are decorated with captivating frescoes that showcase the distinct Shekhawati artistry and exquisite craftsmanship of that period. During the holy month of Sawan, several special worship ceremonies, including Rudrabhishek, are organized within the temple premises.
Such Crystalline Shivlings Found at Only Three Places in Rajasthan
According to Rajput Hostel warden Dhanne Singh Shekhavat, rare Shivlings constructed from crystalline stone exist at only three locations across the entire state of Rajasthan. The first is the renowned temple at Mandawa Fort, the second is the historical shrine in Nathadwara, and the third is this ancient temple situated within the Shri Roop Smarak complex in Nawalgarh. This rare characteristic renders the temple exceptionally unique from both religious and historical perspectives. Consequently, the Nawalgarh shrine functions not merely as a place of worship, but as a priceless repository of Shekhawati's rich heritage, royal remembrance, and ancient art preserved for nearly a century.
