Political activity in Rajasthan picked up pace immediately after the first phase of voting for municipal body elections concluded across the state. The political temperature touched new heights in Alwar district, where the Congress summoned candidates from the Alwar Municipal Corporation alongside Ramgarh, Nogawan, Malakhera, and Bahadurpur to the office of Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully located at Moti Dungri. Subsequently, all of them were boarded onto buses and transported to the Aranya Sariska Wilderness Resort. To prevent cross-voting and maintain secrecy, the mobile phones of the candidates were also switched off, and there are strong indications that they might be shifted to another resort in Jaipur. Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully claimed that the Congress board will be formed in the municipal corporation and several independent members are also in touch with them. Meanwhile, in Bharatpur, the BJP has stepped up its strategy to secure a majority for forming the municipal board. The party is preparing to unite rebel and independent councilors and take them to Jaipur, with party leaders claiming that nearly 70 councilors could end up in their camp. The election results are scheduled for September 14, followed by the mayoral election on September 21.
Maneuvering in Barmer and Sriganganagar
Internal factionalism within the Congress party in Barmer came out in the open once the voting process wrapped up. Former MLA Mewaram Jain is executing a separate relocation strategy for the candidates he supports, while the district Congress committee is separately attempting to keep its flock of councilors intact. At the same time, the BJP is making vigorous efforts to keep its own councilors united. In Sriganganagar district, including the municipal boards of Raisinghnagar, Anupgarh, Suratgarh, Srivijaynagar, and Gharsana, the era of post-election resort politics has also begun. Here too, candidates from the BJP, Congress, and independent factions have been dispatched to undisclosed locations, while widespread discussions regarding the heavy use of financial resources in political circles remain a major talking point.
