Startling statistics concerning the state of basic infrastructure in government schools have emerged within the Rajasthan legislative assembly. In an official reply, the state government admitted that hundreds of schools across the region do not possess their own buildings, while a vast number of institutions operate without basic amenities like drinking water and functional restrooms for students, exposing deep flaws in the public education framework.
This information came to light through a response provided in the Rajasthan assembly following an inquiry by Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully. He had formally asked the administration about the status of school buildings, sanitation facilities, and other essential provisions. The official disclosure has once again brought the dismal condition of government-run educational institutions into sharp focus.
A Vast Network of Over 64,000 Schools
According to the data furnished by the government, there are a total of 64,484 state-run schools operating across Rajasthan. Despite this massive educational network, the ground reality remains grim in numerous locations due to the severe scarcity of infrastructure.
The official figures show that out of these, 2,047 schools completely lack toilet facilities for students. Furthermore, 1,049 government schools do not have any arrangement for drinking water.
Most notably, the government acknowledged that 611 government schools are entirely without buildings. This raises critical questions about the difficult and adverse circumstances under which children enrolled in these schools are forced to pursue their studies.
Action Plans and Budgetary Provisions
The Leader of Opposition had also questioned whether the administration had formulated any specific action plan to ensure proper buildings, restrooms, and other necessary amenities in these schools. In response, the government stated that adequate provisions have been made in the budget to improve school conditions and provide required facilities.
The administration noted that under secondary education, current budgetary allocations have set aside 550 करोड़ रुपए for the repair and renovation of school buildings.
Funds Allocated For Shelterless and Dilapidated Schools
Additionally, the government reported that 450 करोड़ रुपए have been provisioned for constructing new buildings for schools that are either shelterless or operating out of severely dilapidated structures. While the authorities have conceded that 611 schools lack buildings and thousands miss out on water and sanitation, they maintain that these deficits will be addressed through comprehensive repair and construction schemes backed by these financial allocations.
These admissions have sparked widespread debate over the fundamental needs of government schooling in the region. With basic amenities missing from thousands of campuses, the focus now shifts to how quickly and effectively these allocated funds translate into actual construction and renovation work on the ground to rescue these underprivileged institutions.
