Sikar, long recognized as a prominent academic hub in Rajasthan for medical and engineering entrance prep, has seen a rapid expansion in National Defence Academy (NDA) coaching. Over the past few years, youth seeking careers as military officers have driven a twofold increase in admissions across defence coaching institutes in the city. Approximately 25,000 students across the broader Shekhawati region are presently preparing for various military entrance exams, indicating a major shift in youth career preferences.
Youth from Six North Indian States Converge on Sikar
The movement toward NDA foundation courses extends well beyond Rajasthan. Students from neighboring states including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh are moving to Sikar in large numbers to access structured entrance training. According to industry estimates, nearly eight lakh candidates across the country have engaged in NDA foundation preparation over the last three years, reflecting nationwide interest in officer cadre roles.
Policy Shift Triggers Surge in Female Aspirants
A transformative policy change in 2021 allowed female candidates to take the NDA examination, creating new career avenues for women in the Indian Armed Forces. This regulatory shift has triggered an unprecedented surge in young women enrolling in defence prep courses, with girls from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan leading the cohort. The increased presence of female students in Sikar classrooms underscores growing gender parity in military officer training programs.
Understanding the Selection Pathway and Training Rigor
The journey to earning a commission through the NDA is highly competitive. Over eight lakh applicants compete annually for slightly more than 700 available seats. Following the written examination, only around 10,000 candidates qualify for the subsequent interview stage conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB) along with medical evaluations. Successful cadets undergo three years of academic and military training at the National Defence Academy, followed by a final year of specialized training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) for army cadets. Upon graduation, officers are commissioned as Lieutenants, with clear promotion trajectories extending from Captain up to the rank of General.

Individual student journeys highlight the diverse motivations behind choosing defence careers over traditional options. Ayushi, a native of Kota, decided during her tenth grade to pursue a military commission. Moving to Sikar during her eleventh grade to join an NDA foundation program, she noted that the defence route offered superior professional growth and leadership prospects compared to competitive medical prep like NEET. Similarly, Narendra Singh, a Sikar resident preparing for the exam for two years, was inspired by his family long standing tradition of military service. He views the NDA as a dual opportunity to secure a stable career while directly serving the nation.
