The upcoming Amavasya on August 12 holds significant spiritual weight in Sanatan Dharma, offering a dedicated time to honor ancestors and seek the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi. According to astrological insights shared by Pandit Kalki Ram from Ayodhya, specific religious observances on this day, ranging from river baths to feeding animals, help bring peace to ancestors and attract positive energy to households.
Morning Rituals and Offerings to Lord Surya
Beginning the day with purity sets the foundation for Amavasya rituals. Taking a bath in a holy river or nearby water body early in the morning is highly recommended. Following the bath, devotees should offer water (Arghya) to Lord Surya while chanting the Gayatri Mantra, a practice believed to bestow vitality and spiritual alignment.
Alongside the morning offering to the Sun God, feeding local animals plays a vital role in ancestor rituals. Before consuming one's own meal, it is customary to reserve the very first morsel of food for a dog. Astrological guidance stresses that dogs, along with cows, calves, and bulls that wander near residential doors, should never be chased away or mistreated on Amavasya. Devotional tradition holds that ancestors may visit in various animal forms to accept their offerings, making kindness and respect toward these creatures essential.
Evening Worship for Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu
As dusk approaches, spiritual duties turn toward Lord Shri Hari Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. In the evening, practitioners are advised to remember Lord Vishnu while chanting one rosary (mala) of the sacred mantra 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya'. Following this recitation, offering a fresh roti to a cow completes the evening animal service.
For financial prosperity and harmony, worshipping Goddess Lakshmi requires precise steps before 7 PM. Devotees should place a picture or idol of Goddess Lakshmi seated on a lotus flower in their prayer area. A lamp fueled with pure ghee should be lit before the deity. Additionally, creating a small mound of rice and placing a whole turmeric knot upon it serves as an altar setup while chanting mantras dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi.
Spiritual Importance of Ancestors and Household Peace
The ancestral lineage is considered the foundation of current life, with their past sacrifices, hard work, and austerities enabling present well-being. Performing charitable acts, chanting mantras, taking holy baths, and offering Tarpan on Amavasya acts as a gesture of gratitude. Observing these complete rituals with sincerity and adherence to rules is believed to remove negative energies, bring peace to departed souls, and fill the household with happiness, wealth, and ongoing divine grace.
