The auspicious festival of Dhanteras is being celebrated today during the Krishna Paksha Trayodashi of the Kartik month. This sacred day is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kuber, and Lord Dhanvantari to seek blessings of wealth and health. According to traditional beliefs, items purchased on this day multiply manifold and bring lasting abundance into households. While acquiring specific sacred items is believed to invite positive energy and prosperity, purchasing certain forbidden articles can attract negative energy, making it essential to know what is auspicious and what to avoid.
Auspicious Items to Buy on Dhanteras
Purchasing gold and silver coins or ornaments is considered highly meritorious on Dhanteras, ensuring sustained financial stability at home. Brooms are revered as a manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi, and buying a new broom on this day is believed to sweep away poverty and negative energies. Since Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the cosmic ocean holding a pot of nectar, buying brass utensils is also considered very auspicious for health and well-being. Households also bring home idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord गणेश for Diwali worship, ensuring the deity of wisdom has her trunk turned to the left and the goddess of wealth is seated gracefully. Additionally, acquiring whole coriander seeds, eleven Gomti chakras, and yellow cowries is considered extremely beneficial when placed in the safe after worship.
Items to Avoid Purchasing on Dhanteras
Just as certain purchases invite divine grace, bringing specific items home on Dhanteras is considered inauspicious. Glass and plastic containers or utensils should be strictly avoided. Iron objects, sharp or pointed tools, and black-colored clothing or items must not be bought on this day as they are associated with negative influences. People are also advised against purchasing aluminum and steel utensils during this sacred period to prevent unfavorable outcomes.
