Authorities have announced the suspension of general pilgrim movement for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra starting 9 August 2026. Pilgrims will no longer be permitted to proceed towards the holy cave shrine via either of the two primary routes, Chandanwari in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district. Devotees planning to visit Baba Barfani will now have to wait until next year's pilgrimage season. The decision has been taken primarily to facilitate urgent repair work along the mountain tracks damaged by recent rainfall and to safeguard pilgrims against expected adverse weather conditions. However, the traditional religious rituals associated with the pilgrimage will continue as scheduled.
Track Maintenance and Weather Hazards Prompt Decision
Inclement weather and recent heavy rains in the region have damaged several stretches along both the Chandanwari and Baltal tracks, making them precarious for foot traffic. Considering the safety of devotees as the top priority, administration authorities instructed the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to undertake immediate restoration and repair operations across the vulnerable patches. In addition to structural repairs along the tracks, weather forecasts indicate a high likelihood of deteriorating climatic conditions over the coming days. Taking these risk factors into account, officials decided to suspend daily pilgrim movement from 9 August as a precautionary step.
Over 4.8 Lakh Pilgrims Undertook the Journey in 57 Days
The 2026 Amarnath Yatra officially commenced on 3 July 2026 for a planned 57-day duration. Over the course of the pilgrimage so far, more than 4.8 lakh devotees have successfully paid homage to Baba Barfani inside the sacred natural ice cave. Devotees travelled in large numbers using both the traditional Pahalgam route via Chandanwari in Anantnag district and the steeper Baltal track in Ganderbal district. While regular public visits will end with the suspension on 9 August, the overall pilgrimage period officially stretches until late August.
Formal Conclusion via 'Chhari Mubarak' Ceremony on 28 August
While general public access stands halted from 9 August, the holy rituals and centuries-old customs of the pilgrimage will be maintained strictly according to tradition. The sacred 'Chhari Mubarak' (the holy mace) will proceed along its traditional Pahalgam route toward the holy cave sanctuary. The annual pilgrimage will reach its formal conclusion on 28 August 2026 following the ceremonial 'Chhari Mubarak' prayers and rituals. With this ceremonial completion, the 2026 season will officially draw to a close, marking the start of the wait for the next annual Yatra.
