The grand festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna is observed across the country with immense devotion and enthusiasm. From local temples to residential homes, festive preparations are visible everywhere as devotees await the midnight arrival of the deity. Several age-old traditions and customs hold profound religious significance during this annual celebration. Among these distinctive rituals is the practice of cutting a cucumber, which is widely regarded in various regions as a symbolic representation of the umbilical cord separation at the time of the divine birth.
According to traditional beliefs, the cucumber itself represents the womb of Mata Devaki, while its stem is metaphorically treated as the umbilical cord. For this ritual, a fresh and wholesome cucumber is carefully selected. The ceremony takes place right at midnight, where the produce is placed in a clean vessel and its stem is severed using a knife. The separation of this stem signifies the completion of the birth process. Immediately following this step, Laddu Gopal is taken out and given a ritual bath with Panchamrit containing Gangajal, milk, and water, which then marks the beginning of the main worship rituals.
Scriptural accounts state that Lord Krishna incarnated during the midnight hours on the eighth day of the waning phase of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. His birth took place inside the prison cell of the tyrannical ruler Kamsa in Mathura. It is believed that the deity descended to earth to eradicate unrighteousness and establish a righteous order. On this auspicious day, followers observe ritual fasts and offer dedicated prayers to the infant form of the deity. As the clock strikes twelve, the celebrations commence amidst the blowing of conch shells and the ringing of bells. Temples set up elaborate tableaux while offering new garments and traditional butter-sugar sweets to the deity. Pious belief holds that sincere worship on this occasion brings prosperity and peace of mind.
How the Cucumber Ritual Is Performed
Following established customs, a fresh cucumber featuring an intact stem is chosen for the worship proceedings. After thoroughly cleaning the produce, it is placed near the idol of the deity at the altar. Subsequently, ritual ablutions with Panchamrit, prayers, and evening lamps are conducted. At midnight, which marks the auspicious hour of the birth, the stem of the cucumber is severed using a clean knife or ritual instrument amidst the blowing of conch shells and joyful chants.
Many households refer to this specific practice as the cutting of the umbilical cord. Afterward, the cucumber is formally presented to the deity and later distributed among devotees as blessed prasad.
