The sacred occasion of Govatsa Dwadashi is observed by mothers who keep fasts to pray for the long lives and well-being of their children. During this festival, cows and calves are worshipped with great devotion across various regions. While listening to the traditional Govatsa Dwadashi narrative during an auspicious muhurat is a core part of the rituals, many devotees are unaware that hearing the dedicated Ganesha story is considered equally vital for completing the worship successfully.
The Tale of a Young Girl at the Fair
According to traditional folklore associated with this festival, a mother and her daughter lived in a village. One day, when the villagers were preparing to visit a local Ganesha fair, the young girl expressed her desire to attend. Her mother initially warned her against it, explaining that the massive crowd could lead to an injury if she fell. However, when the daughter insisted, the mother packed two laddoos and some water, instructing her to offer one portion to Ganesha and keep the rest for herself before sending her off to the celebration.
A Divine Intervention Through the Night
The fair eventually concluded and everyone returned to their homes, but the girl did not come back. She remained seated near the Ganesha idol throughout the entire night, repeatedly offering one share of the food and water to the deity. Recognizing that the child would refuse to leave and that her mother must be extremely worried, Ganesha assumed the form of a young boy. He approached her, accepted the offering, and consumed the water she brought.
Fulfillment of Every Aspiration
After partaking in the offering, the divine figure asked the girl what she wished to receive. Caught in deep thought, she wondered whether to ask for food, wealth, a suitable groom, or a grand palace. Sensing her inner thoughts, Ganesha told her to return home and assured her that every single desire she harbored would materialize. Upon reaching home, she recounted the entire incident to her mother, and soon all her cherished wishes were magically fulfilled.
