For decades, conventional scientific wisdom held that intoxicants and mind-altering habits were born out of agricultural settlements. However, fossilised human remains discovered on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi have fundamentally overturned that timeline. Analysis of 25,000-year-old human teeth shows that Ice Age hunter-gatherers were already placing whole areca nuts in their mouths and sucking on them for hours. This finding, published by researchers from Griffith University, provides the earliest direct physical evidence of any psychoactive plant being utilized by humans anywhere in the world.
The Breakdown of Agriculture-Centric Theories
Historical research has conventionally taught that substance use followed the domestication of plants and animals. According to previous archaeological models, humanity's earliest intentional intoxicant was a fermented beverage resembling beer, brewed using barley approximately 13,000 years ago in what is modern-day Israel. Evidence of the deliberate consumption of mind-altering plants had generally been traced back only to the Bronze Age, around 3,500 years ago. These older chronologies suggested that altered states of consciousness were leisurely pursuits that emerged only after communities achieved food surpluses and stable settlements.
Researchers at Griffith University's Australian Research Centre for Human Evolution, led by Professor Adam Brumm, have dismantled that long-standing view. The Enduring Global Reach and Chemistry of Areca Nut
Today, areca nut ranks as the fourth most widely used psychoactive substance on the planet, trailing only alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine. While the product remains largely unfamiliar to Western populations, it holds deep cultural and social significance across South Asia, India, and the Pacific Islands. Contemporary estimates indicate that one in every ten individuals globally, or roughly 600 million people, consumes areca nut in one form or another on a daily basis.
In contemporary usage, the nut is commonly combined with slaked lime, catechu, and spices to produce betel quids or gutkha. Slaked lime plays a pivotal biochemical role by raising the alkalinity in the mouth, allowing arecoline, the primary psychoactive alkaloid in the nut, to be rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and stimulate the central nervous system. Because organic seeds deteriorate quickly in tropical archaeological layers, researchers had long struggled to pinpoint the exact era when humans first began harvesting and consuming the plant.
Microscopic Clues Found on 25,000-Year-Old Teeth
The quest for tangible evidence ended inside limestone caves on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, where excavations uncovered rare skeletal remains and dental specimens of two prehistoric individuals. As documented in the journal Science Advances, one of the specimens dates back roughly 25,000 to 16,000 years ago, while the second individual lived between 7,600 and 6,300 years ago.
Microscopic analysis of the dental remains revealed striking anomalies on the tooth enamel. Instead of the typical abrasions caused by chewing fibrous flora or cracking animal bones, the teeth exhibited smooth, circular depressions and localized wear patterns. Detailed forensic evaluation determined that these marks resulted from the sustained friction of holding and sucking whole, uncut areca nuts inside the cheek pouch over extended periods. This specific wear pattern represents a newly identified bioarchaeological marker in human evolutionary studies.
Solving the Mystery of Psychoactive Effects Without Slaked Lime
The dental findings created a complex scientific dilemma. Modern pharmacological consensus assumed that the active compound arecoline requires an alkaline substance like slaked lime to be released in amounts sufficient to affect the human brain. Given that Paleolithic foragers 25,000 years ago lacked the thermal technologies necessary to produce mineral lime from limestone, researchers had to explain how ancient users experienced any psychoactive effect.
To investigate the mechanism, Professor Adam Brumm and his research team devised an experiment in the laboratory. Intact areca nuts were soaked in artificial saliva for several hours to simulate prolonged oral retention. The resulting extract was then introduced to human neural receptors expressed in frog oocytes, which function similarly to the synaptic switches that regulate cognitive activity and mood in the human nervous system. The tests confirmed that prolonged salivary extraction of uncut areca nuts liberates sufficient quantities of arecoline to cross biological thresholds and induce measurable stimulation. Chemical testing subsequently confirmed the presence of arecoline traces within the ancient dental remains, providing conclusive proof of its regular consumption.
From Ancient Pain Relief to Habitual Addiction
Scientists believe that early hunter-gatherers did not initially adopt the practice solely for recreational pleasure. In the harsh conditions of the Ice Age, dental decay, abscesses, and systemic oral pain were common afflictions. Arecoline is known to possess analgesic properties that dull pain receptors and alleviate physical suffering.
