The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm announced the winners of the prestigious Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on Monday. This year, the highest recognition in biomedical research has been jointly awarded to three scientists: Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel. The unveiling marks the official commencement of Nobel Prize week, where top achievements across science, literature, and global peace are recognized annually.
Breakthrough Work on Light-Gated Ion Channels and Optogenetics
The three laureates were selected for their foundational discoveries surrounding light-gated ion channels and the development of optogenetics. This revolutionary method allows scientists to control specific cells and neural pathways using targeted beams of light. While Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel deciphered the molecular mechanics of light-sensitive channel proteins, Karl Deisseroth played an essential role in integrating these genetic tools into neurobiology, opening unprecedented avenues to study brain circuitry.
Prize Value and Nobel Week Proceedings
The total prize purse for this year has been set at 12 million Swedish kronor, which translates to approximately 1.2 million US dollars. This sum will be distributed among the three laureates in recognition of their collaborative scientific milestones. Following the announcement in medicine, subsequent prizes across physics, chemistry, literature, and peace will be unveiled over the remainder of the week.
